List 4 functions of the plasma membrane.

1. Selective Permeability – They regulate the passage of materials (selectively – permeable).

Plasma membranes are selectively permeable (or semi-permeable), meaning that only
certain molecules can pass through them. Water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide can easily
travel through the membrane.
2. Endocytosis and Exocytosis – They receive information that permits the cell to sense and
respond to changes in its environment. Endocytosis is when a cell ingests relatively larger
contents than the single ions or molecules that passes through channels. Through
endocytosis, a cell can take in large quantities of molecules or even whole bacteria from the
extracellular fluid. Exocytosis is when the cell releases these materials.
3. Cell Signaling – They contain specialized structures that allow specific contacts and
communication with other cells. It facilitates communication and signaling between cells
4. A Physical Barrier – They participate in and serve as surfaces for biochemical reaction. The
plasma membrane provides structural support to the cell.

Why the Cell Membrane is called Fluid Mosaic Model?

- Cell Membrane is also called Fluid Mosaic Model because of the variety of molecules that
make up the cell membrane. There are numerous types of proteins embedded in the
membrane, for example. The lipid bilayer is the liquid section of the cell, which floats along
the lipids due to the various molecules that make up the cell.
