OBJECTIVES:

WHAT IS CAROUSEL BRAINSTORMING?
A strategy used to help students learn new
information or review existing information through
movement and reflection

Strategy facilitates the development of group skills


(brainstorming, discussion, communicating
information) and also promotes active learning
within the classroom.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER:
1. Arrangement of the classroom -  is arranged to include
various stations. It is important to number each station, to
enable easy movement .and avoid confusion around each
station.

2. Questions -  Each station will have a question that needs


to be answered by the groups.

3. Student groups - Students are divided into


groups of four or five

4. Timing -  students are allotted three to five minutes


to discuss and write down their responses.

5. Discussion round - As an end to the session a


discussion can be initiated.
WHY USE CAROUSEL BRAINSTORMING
1. Tapping-into-Prior-Knowledge to informally assess
how much your participant/student knows about a
given question or a topic

2. Reviewing an assigned text, topic, theme.

3. Sharing and discussing information among


participants to address a proposed question and or
topic.
WHY USE CAROUSEL BRAINSTORMING

4. Encouraging oral language development, by having


students use language within a specific context and
content area.

5. Holding all students accountable by having each


make a contribution to the given question or topic
(either verbally or in writing).
IMPLEMENTING CAROUSEL
BRAINSTORMING
1. Depending on what you are “Introducing” or
“Reviewing” and the size of your group of students, write
at least 4-5 questions or topics on chart papers that you
will then post around the room/classroom.

2. Then assign students to collaborative groups. At that


time, provide each student with a different colored marker

3. Each collaborative group is sent to one of the chart
papers and asked to review and discuss the posed
question or topic.

4. After a brief discussion and sharing, each student is


required to write an individual response (with their
colored marker) that must be different from his/her
colleagues.
