Healthy School Environmen
A school must be a clean and safe place for students. Clean
and safe school community environment is a conducive
place for learning. Having a safe, clean, and well-maintained
school will give a positive climate to the pupils and staff of
the school that will promote connectedness among one
another. Aside from that, it will help develop the pupil’s
learning progress.
To be able to have a healthy school environment,
administrators, teachers pupils, counselors, school health
personnel and all the people who work in school such as
guards, janitors, and canteen personnel must help one
another, involve and commit themselves to maintain it.
Below are some of the general characteristics of a healthy
school environment according to physical and psychosocial
characteristics.
Physical Characteristics
1. The school field and playgrounds are clean and well-
maintained.
2. Plants and trees are present in the school vicinity.
3. The school grounds look visually attractive.
4. Janitors helps clean the school surroundings.
5. Garbage cans are available for proper waste management.
6. The classrooms are well-lit and have good ventilation. 7.
There are adequate number of chairs and tables for pupils.
8. Blackboard, chalk board, eraser, chairs, tables, bulletin
board, and other learning materials are present in the
classroom
9. The comfort rooms are clean and supplied with clean
water, soap, tissue paper, and working toilets.
10.The school clinic is clean and equipped with the
following: health charts, stethoscope, thermometer, height
and weighing scales, first aid kit, and medicines.
11.The library is well-organized and favorable for learning.
12.The canteen is clean and smells good.
13.Healthy and nutritious foods are available in the canteen.
14.The canteen personnel follow proper hygiene and food
handling.
15.Security guards are present at school gate.
16.The teachers’ offices are organized and neat.
17.School announcements and health information posted on
the bulletin boards are updated.
18.Safety signs like “Watch your steps”, “Low headroom”,
"Do not run in the hallway”, “No littering”, etc. are present
in school.
Psychosocial Characteristics
1. Janitors, maintenance staff, canteen staff and security
guards are friendly and nice.
2. The teachers are approachable to students and parents.
3. The guidance counselor is helpful and listens to students
who come in his/her office.
4. The students can play well with their friends.
5. There is a zero tolerance for any form of bullying.
6. Penalties for improper behavior are clear and meaningful
to the school community.
7. Students have chances to join in extra-curricular activities.
8. Counseling services are available to students and staff.
9. The school administration makes guidelines that support
holistic health (physical, mental, emotional, and social
health) of students and staff.
10.The school health personnel update health advisories on
the bulletin board.
11.Health awareness projects and programs are conducted
like fire safety and awareness program, earthquake drills,
personal safety lessons, food safety lessons, drug awareness,
etc.
12.Parents of students can take part in school meetings and
activities.
13.The school has access to health education resources and
programs.
14.The school health programs are evaluated by the parents
and students.
15.The school administration reviews and checks its school
health program based on DepEd and DOH advisories and
students and parents’ evaluation.
Healthy Community Environment
A community a group of people living in the same place who
shares common interests and resources. Therefore,
community health refers to the health status and concerns of
the members of the community.
A barangay is an example a community wherein in the
Philippines, every barangay must have at least one Barangay
Health Station (BHS) to assess and monitor the health of
community members and provide them with proper health
care. To have a healthy community, members must be
united, cooperative, involved and committed to make their
community safe and healthy. In a healthy community, people
are encouraged to make choices, achieve a common goal,
and form lasting bonds with one another which shows a
strong sense of family, community, and civic pride. The
following are general characteristics of a healthy community
according to physical and psychosocial characteristics.
Physical Characteristics
1. There is at least one health center or station in barangay
and in municipality.
2. Households have access to different sources of water that
are clean and free from pollution
3. Playgrounds, parks, and sports facilities offered in the
community are clean and safe.
4. Plants and trees are available in the neighborhoods,
playgrounds, and parks.
5. The roads and sidewalks are free from litters which are
maintained by the street sweepers.
6. Garbage segregation or waste management programs are
strictly implemented by the local government unit.
Psychosocial Characteristics
1. The community members are safe and feel safe in their
community.
2. The local government unit regularly updates the
community members on the different disaster preparedness
programs.
3. Neighbors and community members respect one another
and have a high sense of civic pride.
4. Positive interaction between the community leaders and
members are present.
5. The youth can take-part in different community activities.
6. Community members have access to information.
7. Community members shows discipline in waste
management and road safety.
Generalization:

The teacher will summarize the important


details of the lesson after the discussion by asking
some questions to the learners.

place and shares the same interest.

country. Generally, one enumerator is assigned to

people live harmoniously and peacefully together.
 A healthy school and community environment has a
physical characteristics like clean water, clean air
and flexible spaces.
 The characyeristics of a healthy school and
community environment can be classified into two.
These are Physical environment and Psychosocial
environment.
 Physical environment includes: safe, clean, and
good quality of air and water quality , visuality
pleasing and have flexible places.
 Psychosocial environment includes: warm
atmosphere, healthy interpersonal relations, and free
from abuse and discrimination. It is where learners
atre encouraged to build harmonious relationship
with each other. There is also a positive interaction
among learners and teachers.
