Lesson The Major Scales
Competency: Reads simple musical notations in
1 the Key of C Major, F Major and G Major. (MU6ME-
IIa-1)

What’s In
Have you experienced singing or humming a tune of a song while
doing something or while relaxing? This tune that you hum or sing is called
melody. In this lesson, you will learn another element of music that refers to
the succession of notes and rests in a musical composition.

What’s New
Composers use scales to organize their composition in writing
melodies and harmonies. Different scales have been used in other eras and
cultures which often sound strange to you. The most common scales in the
Western music are the major and minor scales. These two scales are
composed of eight notes on ascending and descending manner. Music based
on major scales sounds happy or joyful. Music based on minor scales
expresses sad, serious, or mysterious moods.

What is it
The scale is a series of adjacent tones arranged in a plan of half
steps and whole steps and whole steps. It’s a succession of eight notes
that go up (ascending scale) the staff without repeating or skipping. The
scale is the basis for direction and combination of notes.

1. C Major Scale
C major is the simplest as it contains no sharps (#) or flats ( ) and the
key note is located on the first ledger line below the staff. It is the basic key
signature upon which other scales may be built. The C major scale consists
of the following pitches: C D E F G A B

7
C major scale is composed of whole tones (steps) and semitones (half
steps) occurring between 3-4, 7-8. It starts and ends with do. The distance
from one pitch to the other is called interval.

2. F Major Scale
The F major is a major scale based on F, consists of the following
pitches: F G A Bb C D E. Its key signature has one flat: Bb. Its relative minor
is D minor.

F major scale contains 1 flat ( ) on the third line and do is located

on the first space of the staff.
Flat ( ) is an accidental sign that lowers the pitch of the note by a half
step. The F major scale is composed of whole tones (steps) and semitones (half
steps) occurring between 3-4, 7-8.

An example of folk song in the scale of F Major tune is

“May Pulis as Ilalim ng Tulay”.

8
3. G Major Scale
The G Major is a major scale based on G, with the pitches G, A, B, C,
D, E and F#. Its key signature has one sharp on the fifth line. Sharp (#) is an
accidental sign that raises the pitch of the note by a half step. Its relative
minor is B.

An example of folk song in the scale of G Major tune is

“Leron-Leron Sinta.

What’s More
Let’s create.
A. Write the C major scales on the staff below. Use whole notes. The
first one is done for you.

B. Using do, construct the scale of G major on the staff and be sure
to place the sharp (#) on is correct position.

scale.

What’s New

Sing the song “Bahay Kubo”.

10
Questions:
1. What is the time signature of the song?
2. How about the key signature of the song?
3. What is the first note of the song?

What is It
A. C major scale- The C Major Scale is the first scale that we
all learn on the piano. There are no sharps or flats in the C scale -
every note is natural.

Lesson Creating Simple melodies
3 Competency: Creates simple melodies. MU6MEIIa-4

What’s In
After going through this lesson, you are expected to identify the
different major scales, appreciate the melody of a song and create simple melody.
Sing the so-fa syllables in each scale.

What’s New
Study the picture. Answer the questions that follow.

1. How are the notes arranged in picture B?

2. How about in picture B?

What is it
Melody is a succession of tones arranged carefully to give us an
interesting and pleasing sound. It is the horizontal relationships of tones.
Melody moves by steps and skips. It has shapes and keys. If there are
no sharps or flats, the song is in the key of C major.

14
Melodies have central musical ideas that can be heard repeatedly all
throughout the song. It follows a certain key. Usually, for beginner composer, they
use Key of C. It is easier to use because it has no flat nor sharp.
These melodies have shape or contour that moves up and down.
Melodic contour refers to the direction and total movement of the
melodies. Some notes move in an ascending manner while other notes stay on the
same level and some in descending direction.

15
What’s more
Study the song “Pilipinas Kong Mahal and answer the questions that
follow.

1. In what Key is the song?

2. Read and write the so-fa syllables of at least one staff.
3. What are notes used in the song?
4. How about the movement of the melody? Tell whether if it moves in steps,
skips and stationary.

Lesson Self-composed Melodies

Competency: Sing self-composed melodies.
4 MU6MEIIa-4-5

What’s In
After going through this lesson, you are expected to identify the
different major scales, appreciate the melody of a song and sing self-composed
melodies.

16
What’s New
In the previous lesson, you learned how to compose simple melodies
in the Major scales. In this lesson, you will try to sing your own composition.
But first, you need to understand, practice and consider the following elements
needed in singing your self-composed melodies.
To compose or create simple melodies, we need to consider the
following: Pitch names and so-fa syllables, melodic contour and intervals,
accidentals, major scales and key signatures.

What is it
Melodic contour refers to the direction and tonal movement of the
melody. Some notes move in an ascending or descending manner while other
notes stay on the same level or move in a repeated manner. When notes are
moving up or down the staff without skipping a line or space, the movement is
said to be in a stepwise movement. When notes move in a wider distance going
up or down the staff, its movement is said to be in skip wise movement

Interval is the distance between two notes. The interval of notes may be
harmonic or melodic. The melodic interval happens when notes are played in
succession, one after the other or are horizontally arranged on the staff. A
harmonic interval occurs if the two notes are played at the same time or are
vertically arranged on the staff. Look at the example below.

17
What’s more
Direction: Study the song below. Write the number of intervals of the
encircled notes, then, sing the song.

B. Get your copy of self-composed melody. Sing it and assess yourself

using the rubric below.

What is It

Digital painting is a new method of producing art, particularly drawing and

painting using computers and other digital company. The elements and principles
of design do not change in digital painting.

THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Line – is composed of a series of dots or points. it has length without exact
thickness, direction and movement. Examples: vertical, horizontal, diagonal,
wave, curve and zigzag
Shape- It is composed of lines and is two- dimensional. The direction and
movement of lines constitute a specific shape. Examples: circle, square, rectangle,
triangle, oval or ellipse and other irregular shapes.
Form- is three-dimensional figure. It is composed of different shapes with
specific length, width and height. Examples: pyramid, cylinder, cube, cone and
sphere
Color- is a visual property of objects as a result of light emitted, transmitted
or reflected. Examples: red, blue, yellow, orange, green, violet indigo
Value- is defined as the amount of lightness and of darkness of color.
Texture- is the visual appearance of the drawing or painting having tactile
quality.
Space- is the area around or between objects.

22
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Rhythm – is the repetition of elements, patterns or movements in art.
Rhythm of elements such as lines and shapes suggest visual movement.
Contrast- the arrangement of opposite elements, light vs. dark, smooth vs.
rough, small vs. large
Balance- refers to either equal or unequal arrangement of things or
elements in the composition.
Variety- is about differences and varieties of objects or figures in the
composition.
Movement- suggests an illusion of activity or in motion.
Unity- helps everything in the picture or painting work as one unit.
Emphasis- is giving certain elements and subjects in a work of art special
treatment or place within the composition.
The use and combination of the elements and principles of arts and design
make digital art worth appreciating.

Nowadays, technology can enhance our art works. It is easier and faster
when we use these technologies. Software learned in the previous lessons with the
use of commands, menu, etc. as well as the use of computer hardware are basically
essential in making a creative digital painting. Digital painting software such as
Corel painter. Adobe photoshop, ArtRage, GIMP and open canvas give artists a
similar environment to a physical painter: a canvas, painting tools, mixing palettes,
and a multitude of color options. Applying concepts on the use of the software can
best create a digital art.

______3. The virtual blank canvas, the menu or tools can be found that will help
you to create the image.
______4. It is important to know how to use the software and be familiar with the
menu before making a digital art.
______5. The concepts on the use of a software are not relevant as long as you can
create a digital art that you want or draw.

What is It
In digital painting, an artist uses a computer tools like mouse, digital stylus and
tablet.

A mouse is a hand-operated electronic device plugged into a

computer. It coordinates the cursor on the computer monitor as the
user moves it around the screen.

A stylus is an electronic pen connected to a tablet either by

plug or wireless it replace the classic drawing board and pencil.

There are five kinds of digital art in which we can utilize our art skills.

1. Computer-Assisted Art – It is also called computer-generated art

that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and special computer programming to
create an artwork. The outcome of the image produced is based on strings of
zeros and ones.

24
2. Digital photo art- It starts when a photo from digital point-and- shoot camera
or from a digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR) is transferred to a computer
through a removable flask, disk, Bluetooth or wifi. The photo is then manipulated
and rendered into a new and improved image using the photo art software installed
in the computer.

3.Digital video art- It uses the same technique and method as digital photo art.
The video file from the camera or video camera is transferred to the computer
and is manipulated enhanced, effects and styles were added before rendering it
as a new video. Photos can also be used as a part of video.

4.Digital painting- It creates image using readily available digital tools in the
computer. The brush strokes are virtually created, and the image is enhanced
through series of brush-in-hand styles resulting to a desired masterpiece.

5.Digital animation- It is a series of virtual drawings and paintings created in a

computer or hand- drawn and copied into a computer and is then manipulated
layer by layer to create movements using another computer software specifically
designed animation.

LAYOUTING, PHOTO EDITING
Lesson USING NEW TECHNOLOGIES

6 Competency: Applies skills in lay outing and photo

editing using new technologies(hardware and
software) in making a poster.A6PR-IIg

What’s In
Editing photographs enables the reproduction, publication, and
distribution of all printed images. To be very precise we say that editing
occurs by "sorting pictures It establishes the overall appearance, relative
importance, and relationships between the graphic elements to achieve a
smooth flow of information (message) and eye movement for maximum
effectiveness or impact.
If the photo, as captured directly from your camera, expresses that which
you intend, then no editing is necessary. If you intend something that the raw
photo does not express (a different crop factor, color changes, glare corrections,
etc.), then editing is necessary.

What’s New
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is True and FALSE if otherwise:
1. Higher contrast makes an image punchier, while lower contrast makes it flatter
in color
2. Color adjustments: change the color of an item or element in the photo.
3. Resizing and cropping: adjust the dimensions of the image.
4. Layouting cannot be applied in photo editing using new technologies.

What is It
Simple photo-editing techniques include:

1. Noise reduction- smoothing the picture out, typically accomplished by

reducing the pixel size
2. White balance- the color of the light in the image
3. Contrast- higher contrast makes an image punchier, while lower contrast
makes it flatter in color
4. Exposure - the brightness of the photo
5. Lens correction- addresses any issues with the camera lens
6. Color adjustments- change the color of an item or element in the photo
7. Resizing and cropping- adjust the dimensions of the image
8. Background removal: delete the background from the image, isolating the
subject (this is often used for white background product photography)

29
The illustrations below show the different icons, commands to create and
apply the skills in photo editing and lay outing.

The illustrations below show the before and after effect of lay outing and
photo editing using new technologies.
