Constructing and Interpreting

Lesson
1 Pie Graph Based on a Given
Set of Data

What I Need to Know

Atthe end of this lesson, you are expected to:

o construct a pie graph;
o interpret data presented in a pie graph
o solve routine and non-routine problems using data presented in a pie
graph and
o tell the importance of engaging in sports

What’s In

Directions: Read, analyze and write your answer on a separate sheet of

paper.

A. Change percent to decimal then to degrees. Number 1 is done for you.

PERCENT Decimals Solution ANGLE

What’s New

Are you excited for a new learning?

Then, let us read and analyze the given situation.

Mark surveyed 250 people at the Municipal Athletic Meet and

asked them what their favorite event is. He made the pie graph
below showing the result of his survey. How many people favored
volleyball? football? basketball? track and field? other events?

Favorite Event at the Municipal Meet

Other
Events,
Volleyball, 10%
20%

Basketball,
Football, 30%
22%

Track and
Field, 18%

• Who made a survey?

• How many people did he survey?
• What is the title of the pie graph?
• What event got the highest percentage?
• What event got the lowest percentage?
• Do you also have your own favorite event? What is it?
• What do you get in engaging in sports?

What Is It

• How many people favored volleyball? football? basketball? track

and field? other events?

• To get the number of people who favored each event, multiply the given
percent by the total number of respondents.

3
• There are 250 respondents.
• The pie graph showed 20% favored volleyball, 18% track and field, 22% football,
30% basketball and 10% other events.

Let us solve the given problem following the steps below:

Volleyball

First, change percent to decimal. 20% x 250

Then multiply. 0.20 x 250 =

50.00 or 50

Track and Field

Change percent to decimal. 18% X 250

Then multiply. 0.18 X 250 =

45.00 or 45
Football

Change percent to decimal. 22% X 250

Then multiply. 0.22 X 250 =

55.00 or 55
Basketball

Change percent to decimal. 30% X 250

Then multiply. 0.30 X 250 =

75.00 or 75
Other events

Change percent to decimal. 10% X 250

Then multiply. 0.10 X 250

25.00 or 25

• There are 50 people who favored volleyball, 45 for track and field, 55 for
football, 75 for basketball and 25 for other events.

4
The data about the favorite events in the Municipal Meet were presented in pie graph.

A pie graph is a visual representation used to compare parts of a whole.

Each portion in the circle represent an element of the collected data.
The pie graph represents the composition of various elements in a whole. The total
value of the pie graph is always 100%. Each portion in the circle shows a fraction or
percentage of the total.

The total angle formed at the center is 360°. The whole circle represents the sum of the
values of all the components.

Constructing a Pie Graph

Example: The table below shows the time spent in studying the 4 major subjects in
Grade VI. Make a pie graph of the data.

Filipino 15%

To draw a pie graph:

Math – 40% x 360 = 144

1. Find the angle measure of each portion.
(Multiply the given percent to 360 the measure of a Science – 25% x 360 = 90
circle)
English – 20% x 360 = 72

Filipino – 15% x 360 = 54

2. Draw a circle using a compass.

2. What section of the graph is the largest? _________________________
3. What section is the smallest? _________________________
4. What percent of the time was spent for English? _________________________
5. How many degrees was allocated for Filipino? _________________________

6
What’s More

Now, it is your turn!

Directions: Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

A. Complete the table below then answer the questions that follow.

The table below shows the data of Grade 6 pupils’ favorite vegetables.
