Improved Communication

The continuous advances in technology have led to the appearance of numerous new methods
of electronic communication, such as social networking websites, emails, voicemails, and video
conferences. These advanced communication tech tools have helped us to eliminate time and
distance as obstacles to effective communication.
What is VoIP?

VoIP is a way of making a telephone call over the internet, rather than through a traditional
landline setup. The benefits of this are many, including the removal of reliance on physical lines,
meaning that its easy and cheaper to increase the number of phones for your expanding
workforce
What is a landline phone?

A landline phone is how the traditional phone system is described, provided by copper wires
from a local or national telecommunications company to the premises. It’s a tried and tested
technology, but also an old one with very little advancement in recent years.

Disruptive technology
Because disruptive technology is new, it has certain advantages, enhancements and
functionalities over competitors. For example, cloud computing serves as a disruptive
technology for in-house servers and software solutions. It has slowly been adopted by
organizations and individuals with the main objective of completely removing traditional
computing.
As an unused, unapplied and untested alternative, it takes time for disruptive technology to be
dominantly deployed, ultimately degenerating existing technology.
Internet of things (IoT)

The internet of things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and
digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and
the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-
computer interaction.
A thing in the internet of things can be a person with a heart monitor implant, a farm animal
with a biochip transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert the driver when tire
pressure is low or any other natural or man-made object that can be assigned an IP address and
is able to transfer data over a network.
AI (artificial
intelligence)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the

simulation of human intelligence
processes by machines, especially
computer systems. These processes
include learning (the acquisition of
information and rules for using the
information), reasoning (using rules
to reach approximate or definite
conclusions) and self-correction.
Particular applications of AI
include expert systems, speech
recognition and machine vision.
Improved Home Entertainment
One of the biggest changes, for example, was the switch from videotapes to CDs/DVDs. This
enabled manufacturers to put more data onto the medium. This meant that there were no risks
of the tape coming out of the player and getting damaged that easily, and due to the small size
of the DVDs, it also meant that a lot more could be stored in the same amount of space.
Another huge technological advance was the introduction of LCD TV. Compared to today's LCD
TVs, the previous television screens were inefficient, with lower definition and poor quality.
Today we can not only enjoy improved home entertainment, but different types of home
entertainment too: from smart TVs to Xbox units.
Improved Housing and Lifestyle

Housing and lifestyle have also been impacted by the modern technology. The majority of the
items that you have in your home today are automated, which makes your life much easier,
organized and safer. Thanks in particular to the advanced technological solutions such
automated door locks, security cameras and lighting control, our homes are now more secure
than ever. Also, thanks to the Internet, we have an easy access to all sorts of information, news,
and you're able to shop online any time of the day or night from the comfort of your own home.
How Technology Can
Improve Education

Through the use of learning

management systems
(LMS) students can access online
resources to get assistance on
demand beyond the physical reach of
their teacher.
Parents may be able to meet with
teachers via web conferencing or
other online collaboration tools.
Additionally, they can check their
child’s attendance, assignments, and
grades through online frameworks.
IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY

Technology Has Mechanized Agriculture

Technology has mechanized agriculture: Modern agricultural technology allows a small number
of people to grow vast quantities of food in a short period of time with less input which results
into high yields and RIO ”return on investment”.
Technology Has Improved Transportation
Technology has improved transportation:   Transportation is one of the basic areas of
technological activity. Both society and businesses have benefited from the new transpiration
methods.
Disadvantages to society
Resource Depletion
The more demand for new technologies and advancement of current technologies, the more
pressure we put on earth’s natural resources.
Increased Population
Technology has helped us live longer by improving health facilities and aiding in the research for
solutions for most health problems which affect humans. This is good news for developed
countries but is bad news for developing countries which have not been in a position to access
these health care benefits brought by technology.
Increased Pollution
Pollution affects the land we grow crops on, the water we drink and the air we breathe. The
increased demand for new technologies and advancement of technologies has resulted in many
manufacturing and processing factories.
How Technology is Changing the World of Medicine

Heart failure
One of the most common and costly diagnoses is that of heart failure, with a mortality rate
closer to cancer. It includes three types of sensors – wristband, necklace and watch – which are
used for testing. This type of diagnosis gives both patients and doctors continuous
information on how a compromised heart is functioning.
3D printing
3D printing or additive manufacturing is a
process of making three dimensional solid
objects from a digital file.

These days, medical researchers are considering

the potential of 3D printing in medicine. For
example, Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles
Medical Center is perfecting the use of 3D
printers to replicate multidimensional models of
problematic areas inside patients. Surgeons can
handle the models and simulate a variety of
possible operation replicas before performing
the actual surgery.

Alternatively, 3D printing can be used

in reproducing bones or other organs in the
human body. This advance in technology is also
pushing into prosthetics.
Big data
Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructured –
that inundates a business on a day-to-day basis.
Data is everything, especially in the healthcare industry. It ranges from analyzing diagnostic
reports to filing patient treatment histories. Healthcare facilities have an overwhelming amount
of information for storage.
IBM research teams say that the same super-computer that won a game of Jeopardy in 2011 is
now being used to help physicians make more accurate diagnoses and recommend treatments.
Accelerated experimentation

The Ebola outbreak has shown that expedited medical research and experimentation are
possible. Due to the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) feared the detrimental
effects of a world outbreak, vaccination research efforts have increased. Scientists have started
using advanced methods such as chimp adenovirus, which is “closely related to a human version
that causes upper respiratory tract infections.”
Mobile apps

Today, mobile apps are available for everything. In the healthcare sector, this is especially true.
Doctors and patients are discovering new ways to use technology to monitor personal health.
Nowadays, tracking daily sleep patterns, counting calories, researching treatment options, and
even monitoring heart rate is possible.
Remote monitoring

One of the most useful and practical innovations in recent years is remote monitoring
technology. The systems can be used by patients in the comfort of their homes to reduce the
time and financial cost of recurring visits to the doctor. By using a small device designed to
measure a particular health issue, doctors can analyze a patient’s data remotely without the
need for them to come down to the hospital. Pacemaker patients have made great use of
remote monitoring devices.
Improved communication

With the doctors’ busy schedules and limited free time, it is very important to be able to
communicate with them through electronic devices. New developments in technology have
focused on this point and have been designed to improve the link between patients and
doctors (and viceversa). A new social network is attempting to connect doctors better by
providing a safe place to interact.
Automation

Automation is the creation of technology and its application in order to control and monitor the
production and delivery of various goods and services. It performs tasks that were previously
performed by humans. Automation is being used in a number of areas such as manufacturing,
transport, utilities, defense, facilities, operations and lately, information technology.
Advantages and disadvantages of
automation
Advantages commonly attributed to automation include higher production rates and increased
productivity, more efficient use of materials, better product quality, improved safety, shorter
workweeks for labor, and reduced factory lead times.
Worker safety is an important reason for automating an industrial operation. Automated
systems often remove workers from the workplace, thus safeguarding them against the hazards
of the factory environment. In the United States the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970
(OSHA) was enacted with the national objective of making work safer and protecting the
physical well-being of the worker.
Advantages and disadvantages
of automation
A main disadvantage often associated with automation, worker displacement, Despite the
social benefits that might result from retraining displaced workers for other jobs, in almost all
cases the worker whose job has been taken over by a machine undergoes a period of emotional
stress. In addition to displacement from work, the worker may be displaced geographically. In
order to find other work, an individual may have to relocate, which is another source of stress.
The risks include the possibility that workers will become slaves to automated machines, that
the privacy of humans will be invaded by vast computer data networks, that human error in the
management of technology will somehow endanger civilization, and that society will become
dependent on automation for its economic well-being.
Advantages and
disadvantages of automation
Other disadvantages of automated equipment include the high capital expenditure required to
invest in automation (an automated system can cost millions of dollars to design, fabricate, and
install), a higher level of maintenance needed than with a manually operated machine, and a
generally lower degree of flexibility in terms of the possible products as compared with a
manual system (even flexible automation is less flexible than humans, the most versatile
machines of all).
