Introduction
Since the first Human Development Report was published
in 1990, human development was defined as a process of
enlarging people’s choices and enhancing their
capabilities. The Human Development Index (HDI) was
first released as part of the United Nation’s Human
Development Report.
Human Development Index

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite

social indicator index. Its intellectual roots lie in welfare
economics, development economics, and the social
indicators movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The
objective of the HDI is to rank countries on a scale of
human development conceptualized in terms of
capabilities of humans within the countries to function.
HDI- Dimensions
HDI and Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s position remains unchanged in the Human
Development Index, according to the 2015 Human
Development Report launched by United Nations
Development Program (UNDP). Bangladesh ranked 142
out of 188 countries in the index, while neighboring
India ranked at 130, Nepal at 145 and Pakistan at 147.
Conclusion
The HDI was established to place emphasis on
individuals, more precisely on their opportunities to
realize satisfying work and lives. Evaluating a country's
potential for individual human development provides a
supplementary metric for evaluating a country's level of
development besides considering standard economic
growth statistics, such as gross domestic product (GDP).
