Gasoline Direct Injection

07/16/2020
What is GDI?

 Gasoline Direct Injection

 Highly pressurized fuel is injected

directly into the combustion
chamber of each cylinder rather
than traditional mixing with the
incoming air in the inlet port

 Advantages include more precise

delivery of fuel for lower emissions,
improved volumetric efficiency and
avoidance of knock for better
performance and fuel efficiency

GDI benefits and challenges

 Gasoline Direct Injection

allows low-end torque
improvement and high
compression ratio

 However, with GDI, oil

dilution and particulate
emissions become a matter
of particular importance and
a real challenge

 In order to reduce these

risks, great care has been
taken in the design of intake
port, combustion chamber
and spray targeting
optimization

GDI- Tumble

Regarding GDI, high tumble level

also brings:

 Oil dilution reduction thanks to

spray deflection that reduces fuel
impingement on liner (especially
for side injection)

 Particulate emission decrease

thanks to better mixture
preparation
