PROBLEM 8. A rectangular key is used in pulley connection to transmit 100 KW at 1000 rpm on
50 mm shaft diameter. Determine the force required to remove the shaft from the hub if f = 0.4.

Given: Diagram:
P=100kW
N=1000rpm
D=50mm
f=0.4
Required: 50 mm
Force

Solution:
To solve for the Force we used the formula of torque

F = T/R; where R=D/2

F=

Since the power is given, we used the formula of Power to solve the Torque

Solution:

Substitute the given and solve for the Force transmitted by the shaft

)/

Determine the force tends to remove the key from hub

Answer: 30557.74907 or 30.55774907 kN

PROBLEM 8. A flywheel has a total weight of 500 kg and the weight of arm and hub is 8% of total
weight. If it has a mean diameter of 1 m and width of 300 mm. Determine the thickness of the
flywheel if density of material is 7000 kg/m3

•
Given: Diagram:
Wt= 500kg
Warm and hub=8%Wt=40kg
D
Dmean=1m
Width=300mm 1m

Required: t

Thickness of the flywheel (t)

Solution:

To find the thickness we use the formula of flywheel rim

Since given the total weight and the Weight of arm and hub, solve for the Weight of flywheel rim

Solution:

Substitute the given to the formula we get,

Answer: 65.1777386mm
