Types of SEDEX

1.Broken Hill Type (BHT)

Formed below or near the seafloor

2.Irish Type
Hosted in carbonate rocks, and share
characteristics of SEDEX and MVT.

Nevertheless, SEDEX and MVT deposits

are closely associated and share similar
compositions and ore fluids.
Metallic Mineral Deposits 1
SEDEX are important source of Zn and Pb
in the world.

For example:
Zn Resource Zn Reserve
SEDEX 38.8% 65.1%
VMS 30.2 % 15.3%
MVT 4.2% 1.4%

Metallic Mineral Deposits 2

Deposit characteristics
Vent proximal deposits are characterized four
facies:
(1) bedded sulphides,
(2) vent complex,
(3) sulphide stringer zone, and
(4) distal hydrothermal sediments.

Vent distal
are typically weakly zoned
Well bedded
Conform to basin morphology

Metallic Mineral Deposits 3

Deposit characteristics
Host rocks

Basinal marine reduced facies, fine grained

sedimentary rocks. Consisting of carbonaceous
chert and shale.

Sedimentary rocks are hemi-pelagic to pelagic

interbedded with basinal turbiditic siltstones and
sandstones.

BHT deposits are hosted in alternating bimodal

volcanic rocks and metamorphosed sedimentary
rocks (amphibolite – granulite facies).
