EDGE 2.75G
 EDGE – Enhanced data rate for GSM evolution
 It is also called 2.75G
 It purpose is to provide increase data rate from 2.5G GPRS
network
 Also known as EGPRS – Evolved General packet service
 Small cost to upgrade from GPRS to Edge as same core
network can be used with slight modifications
 Only hardware and software upgrade on GPRS - No change on
the network
 Uses 9 different modulation and coding schemes (MSC) to
enhance data rates.
How?

 200kHz frequency band for uplink

 200kHz frequency band for downlink
How?

 GPRS uses GMSK modulation = 1 bit/symbol

 EDGE uses GMSK as well as 8PSK modulation
Modulation coding scheme (MCS)
 Modulation adaptation
 Good channel condition -> EDGE uses 8PSK = 3 bit/symbol
 Bad channel condition -> EDGE uses GMSK = 1 bit/symbol

 Coding adaption
 Good channel conditions -> More user data bits, less error
correction bits
 Bad Channel condition -> Less user data bits, more error
correction bits
Modulation coding scheme (MCS) …

 Here we use high data rate, and less bits for error
correction
Modulation coding scheme (MCS) …

 Here it’s the worst condition

Theoretical vs. Actual user data rates
 Maximum data rate for MCS9: 59.2 Kbps
 For eight time slots assigned to a user:
 8 X 59.2 = 473.6 Kbps (Theoretical )
 Actual data rate depends upon
 Number of data users in cell
 Propagation from BTS
 Distance from BTS
Architecture
 Only small change on hardware (BTS)
