BIOLOGY SPM QUESTION

Jorja Chow Form 5T

Question
Question
Based on information given in Diagram 4.1, explain the cellular
respiration process that occurs in individual X and Y.
Based on the information given in Diagram 4.1, anaerobic
respiration occurs in individual X and aerobic respiration occurs in
individual Y.
Anaerobic respiration does not require oxygen. It occurs in the
cytoplasm. Here, the glucose is partially broken down into an
intermediate substance known as lactic acid. In comparison to
aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration releases less energy.
As for individual Y, aerobic respiration requires oxygen. It occurs
mainly in the mitochondria. Here, the glucose is completely
oxidized and broken down. This will release a lot of energy and
produce carbon dioxide and water.

Based on the information given in Diagram 4.1, anaerobic respiration

(Heading – Individual X???)
Anaerobic respiration (F1) does not require oxygen (E1). It occurs in the
cytoplasm (E2). Here, the glucose is partially broken down (E3) into an
intermediate substance known as lactic acid (E4). In comparison to
aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration releases less energy (E5).
As for individual Y, aerobic respiration (F2)requires oxygen (E1). It
occurs mainly in the mitochondria (E2). Here, the glucose is

energy and E4) produce carbon dioxide and water (E5).
Question

Muscle fatigue is caused by the build up of lactic acid in our body. In order to reduce the amount of lactic
acid, a track suit is worn to prevent heat loss. Heat that is trapped in the body will maintain the body
temperature. Thus, less oxygen will be depleted to produce heat and the oxygen can instead be used to
oxidise and get rid of the lactic acid. Next, individual X takes a few long breaths in order to obtain more
oxygen content. This will pay off the oxygen debt and be used to oxidise the lactic acid. Lastly, the individual
walks freely as a cooling down activity in order to maintain a steady blood circulation. This will allow the
lactic acid to be transported to the liver, where it is oxidized.
