Project Overview

• Maximum Power Point Tracker is a photovoltaic system that uses the photovoltaic array
as a source of electrical power supply

• MPPT is needed to operate the PV array at its maximum power point

• MPPT techniques are compared on the basis of their performance in different atmospheric
condition

• The following three methods will be compared in this paper

1) Perturb and Observe

2) Incremental Conductance
3) Fractional Short-Circuit Current
Literature Review

•  Mathematical Model of PV cell

• Circuit Diagram of PV array

Perturb And Observe Method

• This method is most commonly used because of its ease of

implementation

• The tracker periodically increases or decreases the solar array

voltage and compares the power output

• While increasing, if the power increases then it continues to increase

else it decreases to the previous voltage where the maximum power

point was achieved

Perturb And Observe Method

• P-V curve
Selection of M.P.P.T
• Example of Solarcon M.P.P.T is taken
• The following steps to be followed while selecting :
o A) SPT-XXYY (XX is nominal battery voltage, YY is maximum charge
current)
o B) Find out what is nominal battery voltage that charge controller will charge
and select XX
o C) Find out what is Wp of PV module
o D) Select the suitable charge current (CC) = (Wp) / XX
o E) Find out YY by multiply CC by safety factor (NEC requirement) = (CC) x
1.2
o F) Select SOLARCON SPT-series model that covers YY
Selection Of M.P.P.T
Things to check

a) Check that Vpm(system) is in range that SPT-XXYY can handle

(MPPT voltage range)

b) If PV modules are in series, need to check that Vpm(system) =

Vpm(module) x Modules in series

c) If PV modules are in parallel, need to check that Vpm(system) =

Vpm(module)

d) Check that Voc(system) is not more than SPT-XXYY range

(Maximum open circuit voltage)

Methodologies
• The following are the different methodologies for the different
techniques
• The values of voltages & currents will be measured
• Power is then calculated ( Power = Voltage * Current )
• The values will be measured in different atmospheric condition so that it
can be judged that the MPPT is giving its best performance.
• Values will be taken for different MPPT techniques.
• Simulation reports and graphs will be generated using SIMULINK
simulation and PSPICE simulation software
• Suggestion for the best techniques for a particular atmospheric condition
