What is Wind Energy?

 Wind energy, Wind farm, Wind turbine and wind power

are all the same.

 Wind energy is when kinetic energy from the wind is

converted into electrical power.

 It is one of the fastest growing renewable energy

sources worldwide with 150,000 in over 90 countries.

History of Wind Energy

 First use of wind energy noted in the 1400s to aid in transportation and later in 200
BC for grinding grain.

 11th century saw wind energy being used in food technology.

 It was later introduced to Europe where the Dutch use wind pumps to drain marshes

 Americas later developed wind electric generators.

History of Wind Energy
How is wind power generated?
 The terms "wind energy" or "wind power"
is the process by which the wind is used to
generate mechanical power or electricity.

 The energy in the wind turns two or three

propeller-like blades around a rotor. The
rotor is connected to the main shaft, which
spins a generator to create electricity.

 The rotor blades are mainly made of

reinforced carbon-fibre plastics or glass
fibre.
Benefits of Wind Energy :

 Wind Energy is Free

 Provides a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels
 Renewable & Sustainable
The wind will never run out, unlike the earth’s fossil fuel reserves (such as coal, oil
and gas), making it the ideal energy source for a sustainable power supply.
  Environmentally Friendly:
After the manufacture and installation of wind turbines, there will be little to no
pollution generated as a result of the wind turbines themselves.
Disadvantages of Wind Energy

 The Wind Fluctuates

Wind energy has a similar drawback to solar energy in that it is not a constant energy
source. Although wind energy is sustainable and will never run out, the wind isn’t
always blowing.

developers who will often spend significant time and money investigating whether or
not a particular site is suitable for the generation of wind power.
Disadvantages of Wind Energy

 Cost Issues
higher initial investment

 Environmental Concerns
noise
aesthetic (visual) impacts

 Supply and Transport Issues

Jamaica (PCJ).
 The largest wind energy facility in the English-speaking Caribbean Located in
Rose Hill, Manchester.

 Ground was broken for the construction of a US$89 million 36.3 megawatt wind
farm at Munro, St. Elizabeth, on February 25,2015

  WWFL commenced operations in 2004 with 20.7MW capacity, then expanded to

38.7 MW in 2010 and to 62.7MW capacity in 2016.

 The company actively supports the growth of Jamaica’s renewable energy

industry by developing human capital.

 Since its inception, Wigton has continually provided training for local engineers
and other professionals as well as tertiary level engineering students.
JPS Partnership with Wigton

 Jamaica Public Service exploring renewable energy sources.

 Introduction of more hydropower and wind power into our fuel diversification
efforts.

 JPS Partnership agreement with Wigton to  provides clean energy to their grid
based on a twenty year power purchase agreement.

   Wigton sells the electricity it generates to the JPS.

 This as reduce national oil consumption by at least 124,706 barrels per year which
has trim close to J$ 1.27 billion off the annual energy bill.

 The projected total plant output of WWFL is 164,775 MWh per year.

 WWFL currently accounts for 6.2% of the grid’s installed generating capacity
and 3.7% of Jamaica’s electricity generation.
