Gender is a set of characteristics distinguishing
between male and female, particularly in the
cases of men and women. Depending on the
context, the discriminating characteristics vary
from sex to social role to gender identity.
Patriarchy is a social system in which the role of the
male as the primary authority figure is central to
social organization, and where fathers hold authority
over women, children, and property. It implies the
institutions of male rule and privilege, and is
dependent on female subordination.
Why do people react differently to males and
females?
Possible explanations: Biological differences,
societies expectations
Gender typing: process by which children
acquire gender identity, and motives, values,
and behaviors considered appropriate in their
culture for members of their biological sex.
Boys are encouraged to adopt instrumental role:
role of providing for the family and protecting
it from harm.
Achievement and self-reliance more strongly
encouraged in young boys.
Nurturance, responsibility and obedience more
encouraged in young girls.
Other researchers have provided more possible
differences:
Activity Level
Fear, Timidity, and Risk Taking
Developmental Vulnerability
Emotional Expressivity/Sensitivity
Compliance
Stereotypes are generalizations about a group of
people whereby we attribute a defined set of
characteristics to this group. These classifications
can be positive or negative, such as when various
nationalities are stereotyped as friendly or
unfriendly.
Throughout this century, the role of women within society
has changed, and the majority of people feel that this
change is for the better. More women work than ever
before, and it is accepted in Western culture that many
women now have careers. Nonetheless, in my opinion there
is still a great deal of sexual discrimination against women
within society, and the belief that sexual equality has been
achieved is not altogether accurate.
PROBLEM FACED BY WOMEN
EARLY MARRIAGE
Early marriage affects women's health status  adversly

 A vast number of girls are married at the teenage.

Nearly 60 per cent of married girls bear children before they are
19.

In rural India almost 60 per cent of girls are married before
they are 18 .
DOWRY
Max Radin has defined dowry as the property, which a man receives from his wife or her
family at the time of his marriage.
Dowry death is considered one of the many categories of violence against
women in South Asia .
Most of the dowry suicides are by hanging, poisoning or
by fire

,
Domestic violence, also known as domestic abuse, spousal
abuse or intimate partner violence (IPV), can be broadly defined as
a pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both partners in
an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, friends or
cohabitation.
The greatest obstacle in women’s path is equality at
home. Hence, there is a need to facilitate support
systems in terms of women friendly laws and policies to
encourage women to work.
