File
• A file is any document, picture, sound or video stored in a computer.
• Each document, whether it is:
• a plain text file for text file
• a letter in Word Word document
• music
• or the code to run a program for program file,
is called a file.

Folder

• A folder is a place in the computer where we


save (keep) our files.
• This is a Folder icon
Folder
A folder has a name and can
contain one or more files.
Disks and Drives

• Disk is an object on which you store both


files and folders.
• Drive is the device that reads from and writes
to the storage media.
• Disks are inserted in drives on the computer.
• Disks are also called storage devices.
Examples of disks

• Hard disk stores files and folders inside the


computer.
• It cannot be moved
Examples of disks

• Compact disc – CD stores pictures, sounds,


video clips and software.
• It can be moved and used in other computers.
Example of disks

• Digital Versatile Disc – DVD is commonly


used for storing video.
• It can be moved and used in other computers.
Example of disks

• USB Disk or pen drive is also used to stores


files and folders
• It can be moved and used in other computers.
• Other names: flash drive, thumb drive,
memory stick
