What is base isolation ?

 Base isolation is a state-of-the-art method in which the structure

(superstructure) the structure  is separated from the base (foundation or
substructure) by introducing a suspension system between the base and the main
structure.
 Base isolation, also known as seismic isolation system, is a collection of
structural elements which should substantially decouple a superstructure from
its substructure resting on a shaking ground thus protecting the building’s
structural integrity.
 It is the most powerful tool of the earthquake engineering pertaining to the
passive structural vibration control technologies.
 An base isolation system must satisfy four basic criteria of effectiveness, in
particular, acceleration response, shear and overturning moments are reduced
by a factor of four to eight for buildings mounted on isolators.

Goals of base isolation

 Protection of Life – Current Code

 Additional Benefits of Isolation
 Protection of Building Frame
 Protection of Non-Structural Components and Contents
 Provide for an operational facility after the earthquake
 Protection of Processes and Function

 1st US application in 1984
 1st Japanese application in 1985
 US - 80 buildings and 150 bridges
 Japan - 1000 buildings and 500 bridges

advantages of base Isolation

# Base Isolation is meant to enable a building or non-building structure to

survive a potentially devastating seismic impact through a proper initial design
or subsequent modifications(retrofit).
# The application of this technique can raise a structure's seismic performance
and its seismic sustainability considerably.
# It provides the design profession the ability to design a building that is
“operational” after a major earthquake.
In nepal…

 Can be easily applied in increasing skyscrapers with a little

development in technical skills.
 Economically feasible if the cost after earthquake is accounted.
 Nepal, being in highly earthquake susceptible region, may serve a
good option
Limitations

 Costly, at the initial phase of construction.

 New in terms of use, thus facing the resistance to change.
 Requires higher technology and design
