Drainage System
By: Niel John C. Salgado
Storm Drainage System
a system comprising of conduits, pipes and other appurtenances for effecting drainage
and used for conveying rain water, surface water or similar wastes

General rule: storm drain is not permitted to discharge into septic tank or to the main
sewer line, Disposal of storm water is an important phase of plumbing
System.

✗ Erosion or washing away the soil from the foundation

✗ Possible leakage
✗ Walls and window leakage because of rundown water
✗ Disfiguring of the landscape areas

Materials
Rainwater downspout or conductor Rainwater downspout or conductor pipings for
pipings for interior: exterior of a low height building:
✗ Cast Iron
✗ Galvanized Steel ✗ Not less than 26 ga. (Galvanized sheet metal)
✗ Iron
✗ Brass ✗ Bottom of the conductor draining must be steel
✗ Copper pipe or cast iron

Calculating Storm Drain
What size of storm drain is adequate to serve a roof of having slope of 2% with a general dimensions
of 20 x 30 meters?

Solution:
1. Solve for the roof area
Area = 20x30
A= 600 sq. m
2. Refer to table 9-1 Under 2% slope, sq. m is within
the limit of 700 sq. m roof area which could be served effectively by a 150 mm. pipe
diameter

7
Sizing of Rainwater Piping
Section 1104.1 Vertical rainwater piping is based upon maximum depth in mm or rainfall per hour falling upon a
given roof area in square meter
Section 1104.2 Vertical wall project above a roof so as to permit storm water to drain to adjacent roof area below
Section 1104.2.1 One wall = add 50% of area of the wall to the roof area
Section 1104.2.3 Two adjacent walls = add 35% of the total wall area to the roof area
Section 1104.2.4 Two walls opposite to each other and of the same height = no additional area
Section 1104.2.5 Walls on three sides = add 50% of area of the inner wall below the top of the lowest wall, plus
allowance for area of wall above top of the lowest wall
Section 1104.2.6 Walls of four side = no allowance for wall areas below top of lowest – add for areas above top
lowest wall
Section 1104.2.7 The areas of the side of a tall building exposed to rain is taken as ½ of the gross area.

Calculating Roof Leader
How large is a downspout required to drain the roof with a general dimensions as shown
below
Solution:
1. Find the area of Roof A
2. Refer to Table 9-2
3. Find the area of Roof B
4. Refer to Table 9-2

9
10
Section 1104.3 Horizontal Rainwater Piping = the side of a building rainwater piping or any of its
horizontal branches is based upon maximum roof areas to be drained

Example:
Roof Area – 548.1 m²
Max Rainfall/hr. – 127mm
Pipe Laid at (20.9 mm/m) slope or s = .02

Find are in column under 127 mm and at slope of 0.02 and read 561.1m2 (as closest) choose 152 mm
answer: 152.4mm as size of leader and downspout at leftmost column

Section 1104.5 If the rainfall is more or less than those shown in table 11-2 and 11-3 then adjust
figures in the 50.8 mm rainfall by multiplying by 2 and dividing by the maximum rate of rainfall in
mm/hr.

Example: In table 11-2 with a 10.4 mm/m or s = .01 and a 203.2 mm rainfall, find the number of
square meter a 102 mm pipe diameter will carry

Solution: 2x349.3 = 87.4 m²

Moderate rain: Greater than 0.5 mm per hour, but less
8 than 4.0 mm per hour. Heavy rain: Greater than 4 mm
per hour, but less than 8 mm per hour. Very heavy rain:
Greater than 8 mm per hour.

Sizing of Gutter
Section 1104.4 Roof Gutter – the size of semi-circular bottom roof gutters shall be based on the
maximum roof area

Example:
Roof Area = 186 m² answer: 178 mm diameter gutter
Max Rainfall/hr. = 102 mm
Pipe Laid at 104 mm/m slope or s =.01

Calculating Roof Area
For a rectangular house, the length is 10m, and the width is 5m. The tip of the roof is 2m
above the ceiling. The roof extends beyond the house by .75m on each side. The area of
roof is m2
E 1. Divide the width of the building
A 2. Add C
the size of eave and the half of width to get the B
2m
3. A²+B²=C²
4. B
Multiply the C by 2 to get E
.75m
5. Multiply the eaves by 2 and add the length of the
building to get the F
5m 6. Multiply the E and F to get the Area
