ENERGY

What is Energy?

• Energy is the ability to do work.

• There are two main types of energy:
• Potential
• Kinetic
Potential Energy
• Energy that is stored and being held,
waiting to be used is potential
energy.
• Examples:
• A car parked in a parking lot
• A child at the top of a slide
• A ball sitting on a table
• Someone pulling a arrow back on a bow
Kinetic Energy
• The energy of motion is kinetic
energy.
• Examples:
• Rolling a ball down a hill
• Going down a hill on a roller
coaster
• Riding your bicycle
ENERGY

• Two types of energy: kinetic (motion) and

potential (stored)
• SI unit of energy are joules (1 joule=1kgm2/s2)
Kinetic Energy

• KE is energy of motion
• KE is a scalar quantity
Practice!

1. What is the kinetic energy of a 60 kg girl on

skis traveling at 20 m/s?
2. A sports car is moving at 4.0 m/s. If the mass
of the car is 800 kg, how much kinetic energy
does it have?
Potential Energy

• PE is stored energy
The compressed spring has
potential energy because
when released it can do work
on the mass, m
• Gravitational PE is energy
of position
Potential Energy

• Gravitational PE is energy of position

Practice!

1. A mass of 100 kg is lifted a distance of 50 m.

How much potential energy does it possess?
2. A 70kg diver standing on a diving platform
possesses 35000 J of PE. How high is the
platform?
Practice!

1. A 10kg boulder rests at the edge of a

100m cliff. How much potential energy
does the rock possess?
2. A 9-Kg ball slides on the lane at a
velocity of 3 m/s. What is the kinetic
Energy?

move from one place to
another place
Light Energy
A form of energy that
travels in waves and can
move through empty space
where there is no air.
Thermal Energy
The energy of moving
particles in a substance;
also calledheat energy
