What is gender?

The modern English word gender comes from the Middle English
gender, gendre, a loanword from Anglo-Norman and Middle French
gendre. This, in turn, came from Latin genus. Both words mean "kind",
"type", or "sort“

Gender is the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating


between, masculinity and femininity.

What is third gender?

Third gender or third sex is a concept in which individuals are


categorized, either by themselves or by society, as neither man nor
woman.
Biology determines whether a human's chromosomal and
anatomical sex is male, female, or one of the uncommon variations
on this sexual dimorphism that can create a degree of ambiguity
known as Third Gender.

Language
 The Third Gender community developed a secret
language known as Hijra Farsi in Asia. The language
has a sentence structure loosely based on Hindustani
and a unique vocabulary of at least a thousand words.

 Some of the kinship terms and names for rituals used


by the Hindi-speaking Hijra community are different
in use from those used by people outside the Hijra
community. For e.g. dadi in Standard Hindi is the term
for paternal grandmother, and in the Hijra community
is used to address the Guru's Guru.

In 2008, HIV prevalence was 27.6% amongst hijra sex workers in
Larkana, Pakistan. The general prevalence of HIV among the adult
Pakistani population is estimated at 0.1%.

On 15 April 2014, in National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India, the
Supreme Court of India ruled that transgender people should be treated as a
third category of gender or as a socially and economically "backward" class
entitled to proportional access and representation in education and jobs.

The Indian lawyer and author Rajesh Talwar has written a book, titled
The Third Sex and Human Rights, highlighting the human rights abuses
suffered by the community.
Since the late 20th century, some hijra(third gender) activists and
non-government organizations (NGOs) have lobbied for official
recognition of the hijra as a "third sex" or "third gender", as neither
man nor woman.

people, eunuchs, and intersex people as a 'third gender' in law.

Nepal, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh have also legally accepted the
existence of a third gender.

The program was launched in 7 districts of the country as a pilot
program from the financial year 2012-13. The 7 districts are Dhaka,
Chittagong, Dinajpur, Patuakhali, Khulna, Bogra and Sylhet. The
allocation for the financial year 2012-13 was Tk 72,17,000/-
In financial year 2013-14 the program has been implemented in 21
districts, including nine new 14 districts, in the financial year, in the next
fiscal year. Dhaka, Gajipur, Netrokona, Foridpur, Rajbari, Chitagong,
Chadpur, Lokkhipur, Brammonbaria, Comilla, Bogura, Joypurhat, Nowga,
Sirajgonj, Khulna, Jinaidaho, Kustia, Dinajpur, Pirojpur, Potuakhali,
Shyllet. During the financial year, the allocation was Tk. 4,07,31,600/-
The allocation of the program for the financial year from 2014-2015 years
is Tk. 4,58,72,000/-
The allocation of the program for the financial year from 2015-2016 years
Extended in over all 64 district of Bangladesh.
The allocation of the program for the financial year from 2019-2020 years
is Tk. 5,56,00,000/-
Aims and Objectives

To provide education to the school-going third gender students at
4 levels (per person monthly primary- 700, secondary-800, high
school 1000 and higher study- 1200 taka);
Provide monthly 600 allowance to the special allowance of
disabled and incapacitated Third Gender peoples, aged 50 years
and above;
Increasing the efficiency of the working Third Gender community
through vocational training and bringing them into the
mainstream of society by engaging in income generating activities;
Giving Post-training financial assistance of Tk. 10,000/-
