OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this study is to employ the phenomena
of coagulation and adsorption in water treatment using
organic waste matter.
Papaya seeds were used as a natural coagulant for treatment
of water.
The seeds act as cation to attract the negatively charged
impurities.
Apple peels use the phenomenon of adsorption to accumulate
heavy metal i.e. Chromium (here).
The cations present on the apple peels attach to the anions
such as chromate and these anions are thus adsorbed on the
surface of the adsorbent. 3
METHODOLOGY
 The water samples from two different sources
were obtained .
 Before treatment and after treatment the water
samples that were treated with papaya seeds were
tested for following parameters: BOD,
COD, TSS, TDS, Turbidity and microbial load.
 Qualitative and Quantitative tests were performed
for the estimation of chromium in the procured
samples, before- and after- treatment with apple
peels.

CONCLUSION
The papaya seeds employed in this experiment were responsible for
the coagulation of suspended solids and reducing turbidity.
Papaya seeds with the coagulant dosage of 0.75 g were observed to
give optimum results.
Around 50-55% difference was observed in TDS, TSS and turbidity
readings.
In case of apple peels too satisfactory outcomes were observed. The
before-treatment concentration of apple peels was higher when
compared to the after-treatment concentrations.
A coagulant dosage of 2 mg was observed to give most optimum result
in the contact time of 45 minutes.

FUTURE PROSPECTS
Through this study we can say that papaya seeds and apple peels can be
successfully used in treatment of water in opposite to their chemical
alternatives.
Considering the fact that papayas and apples can be produced locally its use
in water treatment should be promoted. This may also likely reduce the
current cost of water treatment and provide an eco-friendly option.
Various industries that use apple and papaya as raw material can make use of
the organic waste in the purification of their own effluent as well an
additional facility can be developed to employ the resulting waste from such
industries in purification of effluents.
Further research can be carried out to explore the different aspects of both
papaya seeds as natural coagulant and apple peels as natural adsorbent in
treatment of polluted water. 9
