PUMPS

What are pumps?

• Pumps or water pumps are mechanical or
electromechanical devices that are designed to move
water through pipes or hoses by creating a pressure
differential.
• Pumps are used in order to raise, transport, or
compress fluids.
Types of Pumps

Positive Displacement
Centrifugal Pumps
Pumps
Centrifugal Pumps
• Uses a rotating impeller to move water into the
pump and pressurize the discharge flow.
• All liquids can be pumped using centrifugal water
pumps, even those with low viscosity.
• These pumps work well with thin liquids and offer
high flow rates.
Types of Centrifugal Pumps

Canned Motor Plastic Centrifugal

Radial Pump

Side Channel Pump Regenerative

Turbine Pump
Canned Motor Pumps
• are also called 'sealless' or
'hermetically sealed’
• This type of pump combines the
rotating part of the pump
hydraulics with the rotating
part of the motor on a common shaft and eliminates
the need for shaft seals and prevents leakage.
• Commonly used for high temperature applications, cryo
applications, toxic and carcinogenic media, supercritical
gases, LPG applications, melts / liquids with high boiling
point, water-glycol mixtures, heat transfer media, and
refrigerants .
Plastic Centrifugal Pump
• also called ”Non-Metallic Pumps”
• In a centrifugal plastic pump all
parts in contact with the fluid are
from solid plastic.
• A perfect match if it comes to
corrosive and abrasive fluids.
• Commonly used for chlorine production, metal refinery and
recovery, fertilizer industry, surface treatment, pickling,
anodization, industrial wastewater treatment, sea water
desalination, Chemical industry: organic and inorganic
acids / mixed acids / chlorinated fluids
Radial Pump
• Are centrifugal pump at which the
fluid handled, leaves the impeller in a
radial direction.
• Usually used for: boiler feed systems, apparatus
construction, filter systems, air conditioning industry,
cooling systems, plastics industry, dairy plant, cleaning
systems, shipbuilding, swimming pool technology, tank
systems, refrigeration systems, irrigation systems, booster
systems, boiler and condensate systems, washing plants,
filter technology, water treatment, hardening systems,
process technology, chemical industry, tank storage,
liquefied gases
Side Channel Pump
• Side Channel Pumps fill the hydraulic
performance void between the
positive displacement pump and
centrifugal pumps.
• Are used for low flow and high head applications.
• Side Channel Pumps are used for these typical liquids:
water, sea water, condensate, gasoline, diesel, methanol,
LPG, industrial refrigerants, aerosols or propellants,
chemicals like butadiene, styrene, caustic or light acids,
aromates and solvents, and hydrocarbon condensates
Regenerative Turbine Pump
• Regenerative turbine pumps are
centrifugal pumps for pumping pure
liquids. They are used where great
delivery heads are required with small
volume flows.
• Suitable for small flow rates and high discharge pressures
• They are suitable for pure, non-abrasive or polluted
pumped liquids.
• Are used in car wash installations, in the chemical industry
for cooling, recirculation and as small boiler feed pump,
enrichment and mixture of liquids with gases.
Positive Displacement Pumps
• Positive displacement water pumps deliver a fixed
amount of flow through the mechanical contraction
and expansion of a flexible diaphragm.
• Are used in many industries that manage high-
viscosity liquids and where sensitive solids may be
present. They are recommended for applications
requiring a combination of low flow and high
pressure.

Rotary Pumps Reciprocating Linear Pumps

Pumps
Rotary Pumps
• In rotator type pump, the liquid can be supplied using a
rotary, and its rotation moves the liquid from the lake to
the releasing pipe. Can handle highly viscous fluids with
higher flow rates as viscosity increases.
• Can be classified into three types namely gear pumps,
screw pumps, and rotator vane pumps.
Gear Pumps
In gear pumps, the liquid can be moved among two
rotating gears when it rotates.
Rotary Pumps
Screw Pumps
Screw pumps include two screw
form rotor which turns against each
other. Once the two screw turns,
then it sucks the liquid from the inlet of the pump to the
outlet of the pump.
Rotary Vane Pumps
Rotary vane pumps are like scroll compressors which
include cylindrical rotor with vanes over it. It is covered
within a cylindrical shaped housing. Once it turns, the
vanes on top of the rotor catch the liquid among the rotor
& casing, and the liquid discharges through the outlet.
Reciprocating Pumps
• In reciprocating pumps, the division of reciprocating assists
the liquid to flow forward from the lake. The reciprocating
parts of these pumps are a plunger, a piston otherwise a
diaphragm. This type of pump includes inlet valve and
outlet valve. In the fluid suction method, the inlet valve
opens & the outlet valve stays closed.
• Are classified into three types namely plunger pumps,
piston pumps, and diaphragm pumps.
Plunger Pumps
The plunger pumps are mainly used for pushing water.
Reciprocating Pumps
Piston Pumps
The piston pump is inbuilt with a piston
which is used for pumping the liquid.
Diaphragm Pumps
The diaphragm pump works similar to
plunger pump however it includes
diaphragm for suction & expulsion of
liquid.
Can be used for metering, spraying,
treatment of water, oils, and paints.
Linear Pumps
• In linear pumps, the dislocation of the liquid takes place in
a straight line which means linearly.
• In this type of pump, the calibration cannot be needed.
This type of pump can be placed within a static location.
But, the main issue of this pump is volume. Because of the
piston withdrawal within the cavity, these pumps will make
a lot of sounds and therefore, must be fixed distant from
living places.
• These pumps are classified into two types namely rope
pump and chain pump.
Linear Pumps
Rope Pumps
A rope pump is one type of linear pump wherever a loose
hanging rope is placed into a well & drawn up with the
help of a lengthy pipe where the base immersed within
water. The round disks are attached on the rope, which
will draw the water in the direction of the outside. This
kind of pump is frequently used for both self-supply and
community supply of water.
Linear Pumps
Chain Pumps
The chain pump is one type of linear
pump where a number of circular discs are
located on a continuous chain. One division
of the chain is immersed into the water, &
the chain runs throughout a pipe, somewhat
superior to the disc diameter. Once the chain
is drawn up the pipe, then the water turns
into trapped among the discs and is discharged at the
summit.
These pumps are used for centuries during the early
Middle East, China & Europe.
