What is Hypertension?

● Hypertension is another term for High Blood Pressure.


● High Blood Pressure can lead to severe health complications and increase
the risk of heart diseas, stroke, and sometimes death.
○ Blood Pressure is the force that a person’s blood exerts of their blood vessels.
■ Blood pressure also depends on the resistance of the blood vessels and how
hard the heart works.
■ Almost half of all adults in the US , but many are not aware of this fact
● Hypertension is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular dises including
stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and aneurysm.
● Keeping blood pressure under control is vital for preserving health and
reducing the risk of these dangerous conditions
How does hypertension happen?

● Hypertension occurs when the body’s smaller blood vessels, the arterioles,
narrow causing the blood to exert excessive pressure against the vessel walls
and forcing the heart to work harder to maintain the pressure
WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS

● headaches
● shortness of breath
● nosebleeds
● flushing
● dizziness
● chest pain
● visual changes
● blood in the urine
Causes and Triggers of Hypertension
CAUSES AND TRIGGERS
-If your blood pressure is extremely high, there may be certain symptoms to look out for:
● Family history, especially if your parents or other close relatives have high blood
pressure.
● Lack of physical activity.
● Chronic conditions such as kidney and hormone problems, diabetes, and high
cholesterol.
● A diet high in salt, fat, and/or cholesterol.

● Sleep apnea

● stress

● Birth control medicines

● Being overweight or obese

Ways to Prevent Hypertension
● Eat a healthy diet.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat a variety of
foods rich in potassium, fiber, protein, lower salt, and
saturated fat.

● Keep yourself at a healthy weight.


Calculate your body mass index (BMI), having overwight
or obesity increases your risk for high blood pressure.

● Be physically active.
It is recommended that adults must get at least 2 hours
and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as
brisk walking or bicycling, every week.
Ways to Prevent Hypertension
● Do not smoke.

Smoking will put you at higher risk for heart attack


and stroke. If you do not smoke, do not start. If you do
smoke, quitting will lower your risk for heart diseases.

● Limit how much alcohol you drink.

Drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood


pressure. Men should have no more than 2 alcoholic
drinks per day, and women should have no more than
1 alcoholic drink per day.

● Get enough sleep.

Having enough sleep can keep your heart and blood


vessels healthy.
