TOPIC : ROLE PLAY

ROLE PLAY
“A dramatic approach to learning”
Definition :
An educational technique, in which,
people spontaneously act out problems of human
relations and analyze the enactment with the
help of the other role players and observers.
Role playing is a discussion
technique, that makes it possible, to get
maximum participation of a group, through
acting out, an example of some problem, or idea,
under discussion.
AIMS OF ROLE PLAYING:-

 To illustrate put a interpersonal problems.


 To gain insight into personal attitudes, values, and
behaviors.
 To understand about social and psychosocial issues.
 To understand feelings and opinions of others.
 To develop interpersonal communication skill.
 To enable even the shy and introverts to express
their views.
PURPOSE OF ROLE-PLAY IN NURSING:

1. To convey information.
2. To develop specific skills.
3. To develop a situation for analysis.
4. To prevent alternative courses of action.
5. To prepare for meeting future situations.
6. To develop understanding of points of view
of others.
7. Increasing their insight into typical ways of
dealing with them
TYPES OF ROLE PLAY:-
Socio drama :
It deals with the, interactions of people,
with other individuals or groups, e.g. Mother, Nurse,
Leader, etc. It always involves, situations of more than
one person ,and deals with problems, that a majority
of the group face, in executing their roles.

Psycho drama :
Practiced in a group setting mainly
concerned with the unique needs and problems of a
particular individual. It should not be attempted
except under the guidance of a trained therapist.

Teacher-Teacher, Mom-Dad.

THE VALUES OF ROLE PLAYING:
 The actor really tries to feel the part of the
character.
 It is enjoyed by people who do it.
 It does not need equipment.
 It is a method to involve a group through
participation
In role playing, the student not only hears about a
problem or tells about it, he lives through it by acting.
Individuals may develop new skills for dealing with
problems in human relations.
It allows many attitudes and feelings
ROLE PLAYING CAN BE USED TO
HELP STUDENTS :-

1. Develop real communication skills and


leadership.
2. Develop sensitivity.
3. Develop skills in group problem solving.
4. Develop ability to observe and analyze
situation.
5. Practice selected behaviors in real life
situation.

STEPS IN ROLE PLAYING :

1. Select a problem for role-playing:


The group leader recognizes the problem and the
members note down that problems. Then decide which
problem to work on.

2. Set up the Role Playing scene:


The group firstly forms an objective. Then the leader
decides:
a) What characters are to be involved.
b) The attitudes and personalities of characters.
c) The setting of the story.
d) The point on which the story should begin.
e) The leader gives brief introduction of the players and
the characters they are portraying.
3. Part of the group play: The members not involved in
the role play are assigned to watch role players or
important clues.
4. Cutting the Role Playing: The leader may cut point
which is already discussed to give enough time for the
discussion.
5. The audience observers: The comments of the
audience is most important for discussion.
1) How did the group think the role was handled?
2) What were the good points of the action?
3) What were the poor points or omissions?
6.Role Playing scene: Might be played by different people
so that there is comparison between the behaviors of
different people.
The Process of Role Playing:

 Need : Develops within group, concerns all members.


 Role Play : Explained as a method, Geared to level
and readiness of the group.
 Problem : Controversy and Conflict. Probe different
view points.
 Purpose : All members identify objectives.
 Situation : Specific attitudes and motivations
delineated.
 Casting Roles : Ask for volunteers. Provide
atmosphere which allows for volunteering or choosing
actors. Do not use own names. Recorder may be
chosen to note various aspects of the presentation.
 Briefing an Warming up : Cast members may be excused to
develop own role or review problems. Rest of the group discuss
possible situation. Situation may be presented in the form of a
script to present a frame of reference.
 Method Players : One group represents. Reverse Roles.
Alternate group Substitute roles.
 Audience Participation : Certain members identify with – a)
Actors b) Group asked to look for critical issues.
 Stopping : Cut when purpose is achieved.
 Discussion and Analysis : Actors discuss own performance
first. Group discusses scene. Teacher encourages discussion, but
keeps in background.
 Evaluation : Observe whether the purpose is achieved or not.
CAUTION IN THE USE OF ROLE
PLAYING:

• There should never be one answer to a situation


presented.
• The time of the play should be brief.
• Avoid un-covering deep seated personal problems
which require professional help.
• Be careful about the inter-personal relationship
between the group.
ADVANTAGES:-
 It develops skills in leadership & social
interaction.
 It develops sensitivity to others feelings &
generates awareness.
 It develops skills in group problem solving.
 Develop ability to observe & analyze situation.
 Help in practicing real life situation.
 It helps in minimize shyness.
 Helps in making adjustment & gives scope for
free expression of feelings.
DISADVANTAGES:-

 Time consuming.
 Effective for small group only.
 Beyond using this as a method of learning,
sometimes students may become actively
involved in the role play.
 All problems can not be role played.
