Transport: Movement goods and services
and materials from one place to another.

It provides goods and services from the place of


production to place of demand.

Through transport goods and services reach the


place of requirement.
Role of Transport in economic
development
• Areas of agriculture , Industries, Mining, forestry,
fisheries, dairy farming etc are closely linked with
the markets through transport
• For speedy development of economy fast transport
system are necessary.

Roads:

The roads have constructed since ancient times


.Many kings gave importance for the construction
of roads.(National Highways)
During the British period roads were constructed
for defence purpose
Importance of Roads in India.
*Roads are essential for the
progress of villages and Agriculture.
*Movement of agricultural produce by farmers to the
market is possible only by roadways.
* essential commodities required by the villagers are
transported with the help of roads.
*Roads are feeders to railways.
* It is very convenient for short distance travel and
carry light goods.
Roads are classified into

1. National Highways
2.State Highways
3. District roads
4.Village roads
1. National Highways:

* The Central government is responsible for the


construction and maintenance of these roads.

• The total length is about 70934 km. They connect


the capitals of the states and the ports and
industrial cities.
• The Indian government established NHAI in the year
1989 to construct and maintain National Highways.
Golden quadrilateral and Corridor projects
• This project has 4/6 lane roads with the length of
15000kms national Highway. This was started in
1999 at a total cost of 54000 crores. This is the
largest project taken by any country in the world.
• This project has become necessary for the
economic development.
• They are also important politically too.
• These roads connecting from east to west and from
north to south are enabling transportation of goods
at a minimum cost and shortest time .
• This project is a gift to Industries
• Golden Quadrilateral highways links the major
metropolitan cities of the country like Delhi-
Mumbai-Bangalore-Chennai-Hyderabad and
Kolkata.

• Through this highways other cities like Pune,


Satara, Belgaum , Kanchipuram, Agra, Kanpur ,
Allahabad , Varanasi, Vishakapattanam,
Kharagpurand Vijayawada get linked.
Problems of road transport
• Many village and district roads become unfit for the
transportation during rainy season.
• causes environmental pollution by increased
density of vehicles.
• Roads are subjected to severe wear and tear due to
rain, floods and cyclones.
• Construction and management national highways
and state highways is inadequate.
• Scarcity of basic needs along the roadside is seen all
over the country
