INTRODUCTION

• Indore, the largest city of Madhya

Pradesh State in India.

• Indore is an important textile

manufacturing centre of India.

• The industrial development in

nearby towns has also increased its
commercial importance.

• Because of its central location and

excellent linkages, the city is an
important centre for marketing and
distribution of agricultural produce.
SLUM PROBLEM IN INDORE

• The population of the city has grown very rapidly from 0.56 million in 1971 to 1.25
million in 1992.

• The present population of the city is about 1.4 million out of which 0.45 million live in
slums.

• Over the same period its slums population almost quadrupled from 0.1 million to 0.35
million
URBAN CONCERNS

• Rapid urbanization has led to deterioration in the quality of life of

the city dwellers.

• Indian cities suffer from infrastructural deficiencies, poor sanitation

and solid waste disposal, water shortages, waterlogging in monsoons,
poor transportation and congested roads.

• The urban environment has deteriorated with dust and air pollution,
depletion of green areas and polluted natural water courses.

• The slums have proliferated.

SLUM NETWORKING SOLUTION

Architect : Himanshu Parikh, Ahmedabad, India

Client : Indore Developement Authority, Indore
Design : 1987-1993
Construction : 1989-1996
Occupancy : 1997

• Slum Networking is a concept which exploits the linkage between the slums,
natural drainage paths which influence the urban infrastructure and the
environmental fabric of the city.

• Thus slums, instead of being resource draining liabilities, actually become

opportunities for a change in the infrastructure levels and environmental
quality of the city.
NEED OF SLUM NETWORKING PROJECT

• Sewer lines built in 1936 served only 5% of the population & 10% of
the city.

• All solid waste and city sewage were discharged into khan & saraswati
rivers.

• Poor health & unhygienic conditions.

• Slums along the river.

• 183 slums within networking area.
