Evaluating Functions
Objective:
At the end of the lesson, the learner is able to evaluate
functions and solve problems involving functions.

Evaluating functions means replacing the variable in

the functions, in the case x, with a value from the
functions’ domain and computing the result.
Review:

Degree of Functions
• Linear Functions – degree is 1 5x
• Quadratic Functions – degree is 2 2x2+ y
• Cubic Functions- degree is 3 3x3-2x2+1
Examples

Evaluate the following functions:

a.f(x)= 2x+4 when x= 5
= 2( 5) + 4
= 10+ 4
= 14

b. f(x) = 5x2 when x= 2

= 5(2) 2
= 5 ( 4)
= 20
Examples
Evaluate the following functions:
c. f(x) = x3- 2x2+4x when x= 3
= 33- 2(3)2+4(3)
= 27- 2(9)+ 12
= 27-18+12
= 27-30
= (-3)
Exercise:

Evaluate the following questions

a. f(x) = 3x when x= 3
b. f(x) = 2x3+ x2+4 when x= 2
c. f(x) = 5x2- 2 when x= 5
•
Quiz

Evaluate the following functions:

1. f(x) = 3x2+7x x=4
2.f(x) = 7x-5 x= 6
3.f(x) = -5x+4x2 x= -2
