ROLE OF THERMODYNAMICS IN

PHARMACEUTICS
RAYSIL M. LERADO, RPh, MSPh
Thermochemistry
• The branch of thermodynamics that deals with
the heat absorbed or produced by a chemical
reaction.

• Types of chemical reaction:

▫ Exothermic rxn – one releases energy
▫ Endothermic rxn – one that absorbs energy
Enthalpy
• a thermodynamic system property that is equal
to the system's internal energy plus the product
of its pressure and volume.
• Change in the energy content of the chemical
system.
Process

• Initial state  final state

Hess Law
• Hess’s law states that the energy change in an
overall chemical reaction is equal to the sum of
the energy changes in the individual reactions
comprising it.
Entropy
• The quantitative measurement of the
randomness of the system.
