Question:

• Using a general pumping system diagram tell

what is the operating point of the pump and the
head developed by the pump.
Answer:
• I have selected a pumping system such that it has two
reservoirs and a pump. The fluid is discharged from one
reservoir to another. I have attached the figure:
Assumptions:
• Both the reservoirs operates at atmospheric pressure.
• V1 = 0 because of large cross sectional area.

I have marked location 1 and 2 in fig.1 . Now, for applying

Bernoulli's equation at 1 and 2

P1 = 0
P -> pressure
V1 = 0 ƍ -> density of fluid
Z1 = 0 V -> velocity
Z -> elevation
P2 = 0
H -> head
• For finding operating point:
Hsystem = Hloss + Hstatic
Hloss = k (V̇2)
Hstatic = some constant value = k’

• Operating point:
For steady state flow of a liquid through a pipeline system the total
head developed by a pump (Hpump) must be equal to the system head
(Hsystem) at a given flow rate. This is known as operating point of a
pump.
