Question:
• What will be the maximum velocity in a
Converging Diverging Nozzle when the flow is
choked ?
Answer:
• Considering this Converging Diverging nozzle I have applied
isentropic condition between inlet and 2 position ignoring the
kinetic energy at inlet.
P = pressure
ƍ = density
T = temperature
1 = inlet
V = volume
U = velocity
H= enthalpy
Cp = heat capacity at
constant pressure
M = mass
ɣ = ratio of specific heats
• If you gradually lower the pressure p2 , the flow rate would
increase up to a maximum and not beyond. The pressure ratio
at which this occurs is the CRITICAL RATIO and the CD nozzle is
said to be choked when passing maximum flow rate. When the
formula for the critical pressure ratio is substituted into the
formula for velocity, then the velocity at the throat of a choked
nozzle i.e. the maximum velocity obtained at the throat is the
local speed of sound.
