DISCUSSION 1-3

1. The Bernoulli Equation can be considered to be a statement of the conservation of energy

principle appropriate for flowing fluids. The qualitative behavior that is usually labeled with the
term "Bernoulli effect" is the lowering of fluid pressure in regions where the flow velocity is
increased.

2. Head losses are calculated in elements of a flow path and summarized in a process of a
centrifugal compressor performance modeling.

3. A pump is a turbomachine used to transfer liquids from one point to another. For this purpose,
pumps use mechanical energy. The pump works on the liquid to increase its energy to a higher
energy level or entropy, and consequently its pressure. Then, Turbines are water machines that
absorb energy from the flow of water and convert it into mechanical work. By connecting an
electric generator to the shaft of a turbine, mechanical work is converted into electrical energy.

4. The efficiency of pump where  the relation for calculating the efficiency
of a pump is as follows:  In this relation, ρ, g, Q, and H are water density, gravitational constant,
mass flow rate, and head, respectively. Also, P  is the power given to the pump to operate. And
the dimensionless specific speed of a pump is calculated by the equation below:

Where N represents the rotational speed of the pump in rpm. Then,

Turbine efficiency is .In this relation, ρ, g, Q, and H represent water

density, gravitational constant, mass flow rate, and net hydraulic head, respectively. Also, P   is
the output power delivered by the water turbine. And the specific speed of a pump is calculated

by the equation below:  ,N is the turbine rotational speed in rpm.

5. A house is to be designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. The maximum wind velocity

is v=88ms. The surface area of the roof is A=450m. If the density of air is ρ=1.029kgm3, how
much force must the roof supports be able to withstand?

SOLUTION:

This is solved using Bernoulli's equation and the definition of pressure. First choose
the "Bernoulli points", one just inside the roof where the air is still (Point A) and one just outside
where the air is moving (Point B). This will allow us to eliminate many of the terms:

Since the air is still inside,

Since our points are at the same height, the ρgh terms cancel. Rearrange:

Plug in known values and solve for the difference in pressure.

Force is pressure times area:
