WHAT IS ENERGY
STORAGE?

It is capture of energy produced at one time for use at later

time
Energy comes in multiple forms
Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed
It can be converted from one for to another
CELL OR BATTERY

One of the mostly used energy storage devices

These devices convert energy from different forms and store
them for later use
ENERGY STORAGE
DEVICES

Energy converted from one form to another

Converted energy stored in the devices o be used later
The device that store energy are the energy storage devices
APPLICATIONS

Used in remotes, torches

Used in vehicles
Used in street lights
Used in mobile phones
Used in clocks and watches, etc.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
CELLS AND BATTERIES

Solar cell
Lead storage batteries
Dry cell
Mercury cell
Fuel cell

[here, we will be learning solar cell and H2O2 fuel cell]

SOLAR CELL
 Converts solar energy to electrical energy
 It’s a p-n junction diode without external
biasing

Finger like electrodes

N-type

P-type

Back contact
GENERATION OF EMF

 Light falls on solar cell; e-h pairs are

generated
 e-h get separated due to depletion region
 e move to n-side and holes move to p-side;
P acts as positive and n acts as negative giving
rise to photo voltage
APPLICATIONS

 Use in automatic street lights

 Setup above canals and roof top for
generation of electricity
 In solar panel enabled devices
H2O2 Fuel Cell

 Fuel cell---
Transforms the energy obtained by combustion of , H2,
CO, CH4 into electrical energy in only one step

H2(g) + O2(g)  2 H2O(l) + 571.70 KJ

Working

 It works due to redox reaction

 On passing hydrogen to anode, oxidation of hydrogen
takes place.
 On passing oxygen to cathode, reduction of oxygen
takes place
 The reaction take place at electrode and electric
current is produced.
 Water is released as a by-product
Advantages

 Doesn’t cause any air pollution

 No sound generation
 Highly efficient
 By product water can be cooled and used for drinking
purpose

[this type of fuel cell was also used in apollo space shuttle
programme]
