The Staff

1. A staff is composed of 5 horizontal,


parallel lines spaced in 4 equal spaces.
It is where tones can be represented by notes.

a. The so-fa syllables are :
do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do

b. The Scale Names are:


1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

a, b, c, d, e, f, g
2. The singing Names on the STAFF:

They are represented on the staff as follows:

b. The singing names on the spaces are:

The singing names or So-fa syllables on the


lines and on the spaces are not permanent.
They are movable.
C. The Pitch Names: The permanent pitch for
notes on the lines or on the spaces are called
pitch names.

The initial letter of the lines can be
remembered by memorizing this sentence:
“ Every Good Boy Does Fine”
( E,G,B,D,F )

The pitch names of the spaces spell FACE.


3. The CLEF
- is a musical symbol placed at the
beginning of the staff.
It is used to fix the pitch of a tone on a
staff.
The fixed or definite pitch of a note on
the staff cannot be determined if there
is no clef.
So, a clef is very necessary to be placed
at the beginning of a staff.
1. The G Clef. The other name for a G clef is
“Treble Clef”.
2. F Clef. The other name for an F Clef is “ Base
Clef”.

A staff with a G or Treble Clef placed at the


beginning of the staff is called a “G or Treble
Staff”.
A staff with an F or Base Clef at the beginning
of the staff is known as “F or Bass Staff.
Note: This time , use a yellow paper or immediate paper because it has already lines in it if you are ask to draw a staff.

1. Draw on a clean piece of paper the Staff , then place and identify the singing names on the right side of the lines
and spaces.

2. Draw the Staff and place the pitch names on the right side of the lines and spaces.

3. Illustrate the following musical terms:

d. F Staff
