oxidation of this compound will only affect the methyl and ethyl substituents
of the benzene ring thus there will be no reaction on the tert-butyl substituent
respectively.

(vi) Styrene (vinyl benzene) is a deadly carcinogen in humans. It affects the
CNS and causes a disease called styrene-induced neurotoxicity. It is highly
metabolized in the body via the liver by cytochrome P450. However the
toxicity of styrene is minimized by the treatment with peroxy acid to give 2-
phenyloxirane.
Deduce the equation for the production of 2-phenyloxirane in the treatment
above. (8 marks)
