* Tiles

A tile is a piece of hard wearing material

that could generally used for covering ,
protection and decorating finished or
unfinished surfaces.

3
* Types of Tiles

* Ceramic tiles
* Marbles / granite tiles
* Roofing tiles
* Terrazzo tiles

4
* Ceramic Tiles

*Thin slabs made from clays, silica, fluxes,

coloring and other mineral raw materials
generally used as coverings for floors, walls
or facades.
*It is manufactured through the process of
heating and cooling of natural clay and
minerals.

5
* Types of test conducted

* Water absorption
* Flexural strength
* Dimensions
* Thickness
* Length
* Breadth

6
* Sampling

*A sample for each type of tiles under test

shall consist of 10 whole tiles
*If the proper surface area of each individual
tile is greater than 0.04 m2 (400 cm) then
only 5 tiles shall be used for the test
*When the mass of each individual tile is
below 50g a sufficient number of tiles shall
be taken so that each test specimen reaches
a mass of 50g to 100g

* Procedure
* A sample for each type of tile under test shall consist
of 10 whole tiles.
* Dry the tiles in oven at 110±5oc until constant mass is
reached.
* Cool the tiles to room temperature.
* Weigh each tile and record weight.
* Place the tiles vertically in water in heating apparatus
at 50mm depth above and below water table.
* Heat the water until boiling and continue boiling for
2hours allow tiles to cool for overnight.
* Weigh each tile and record the results
