Synonym
Kata-kata yang secara garis besar memiliki
arti yang sama

e.g. He is going to be absent for a few days.


He is going to be away for a few days.
absent = away
Be careful with words which have more
than 1 meaning
e.g.
1. Several boats lay at anchor in the harbour.
harbour = port
2. Police believe someone must be harbouring
the killer.
Harbour = protect
3. He still harbours ambitions of playing
professional soccer.
Harbour = nurture
Antonym
Kata-kata yang secara garis besar memiliki
arti yang berlawanan

e.g. She needs a general explanation but I


need a specific one.
general >< specific
And again, be careful with words with
multiple meaning!
e.g.
1. She is a sweet girl.
 Sweet >< unfriendly

2. The tea is too sweet for me.


 Sweet >< bitter
Homonyms
kata-kata yang memiliki bunyi pengucapan
yang mirip tetapi ejaan dan artinya berbeda

e.g. see & sea, whether & wheater


Hyponyms
kata-kata yang merupakan bagian dari satu
kelas yang sama

e.g. Color : red, white, blue, purple


So, red, white, blue, and purple are the
hyponyms of color.
Color is called hypernym

I’m sure many of you will look up the
meaning in a dictionary. However, it can
waste your time when you read.

So, what can we do?


We can guess the meaning of a word
from the context.
Try to guess the meaning!
I have been walking for 3 hours to find
your house, and I am exhausted now. I
think I need to rest.
What does exhausted mean?
The answer is “tired”
What are the clues?
1. If you walk for 3 hours, how do you
feel? You must feel tired.
2. The word “rest”
