Le Suicide: Étude de sociologie

SUICIDE
A Study in Sociology
BY: EMILE DURKHEIM
• 15 April 1858 – 15 November
1917) was a French
sociologist. He formally
established the academic
discipline of sociology and—
with Karl Marx and
Max Weber —is commonly
cited as the principal
architect of modern
social science.
-1897 book written by French Sociologist
Emile Durkheim

- It is apparently a case study of suicide, a

publication unique for its time that provided
an example of what the sociological
monograph should look like.

- first methodological study of

a social fact  in the context of
society
Can we think of any famous Suicides?
What is suicide?
-the term suicide is applied to all cases of
death resulting directly or indirectly from a
positive or negative act of the victim
himself, which he knows will produce this
result

-He also believes that because of high

levels of anomie there are high levels
of suicide.
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
1.)Egoistic Suicide

Reflects a prolonged sense of not

-

belonging, of not being integrated in a

community.
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
Give rise to:

-Meaningless
-Lack of interest
-Sadness
-Depression
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
-Durkheim found that suicide occurred
more often among unmarried people,
especially unmarried men, whom he
found had less to bind and connect them
to stable social norms and goals.
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
2.) Altruistic Suicide

-being overwhelmed by a group's

goals and beliefs

-You are willing to risk your lives for the

sake of other people.
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
3.) Anomic Suicide
-is caused by the lack of social regulation and it occurs

during high levels of stress and frustration.

-Anomic suicide stems from sudden and unexpected
changes in situations.
-reflects an individual's moral confusion and lack of
social direction, which is related to dramatic social and
economic upheaval.
-People do not know where they fit within their societies.
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
4.) Fatalistic Suicide

-when a person is excessively regulated, when

their futures are pitilessly blocked and passions
violently choked by oppressive discipline.
- opposite of anomic suicide, and occurs in
societies so oppressive their inhabitants would
rather die than live on.
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
Example: some prisoners might prefer to
die than live in a prison with constant
abuse and excessive regulation
4 TYPES OF SUICIDE
Unlike the other concepts he developed,
Durkheim believed that fatalistic suicide
was theoretical and probably did not exist
in reality
