This drill helps linebackers improve pursuing plays down the line of scrimmage. The coach stands behind the defender and blows a whistle while holding up the number of the hole for the running back to run through. The running back can make one move like a juke or cutback, then the defender must stay in the running back's hip pocket during pursuit to cut off any cutback lanes, before exploding into the hole to make the tackle.

This is a great drill to improve a Three Hole Tackling Drill
linebackers ability to pursue a play
down the line of scrimmage.
Stand behind the defender so he can
not see you. Hold up the number hole you want the RB to go through D and blow the whistle. (Do not use a snap count as the whistle forces the defender to react more quickly) In this drill the RB is allowed to attempt one move, (juke, cutback, stiff arm etc.) not to hit the hole and dance back and forth, as in a game situation he would get crushed from another defender. Instruct the defender to stay in the “hip pocket” 1 2 3 (just slightly behind) of the RB during pursuit in order to cut off the cutback lane. Once the RB has committed to a hole the defender should explode into the hole making the tackle.
