What is Ekushey February?

~Celebrating“ Ekushey February": Language Martyr's Day~ 21st February has become an iconic event for
Bengalis all over the world. It is more commonly referred to as Ekushey February or Ekushey, the day when
all Bengalis dress in black and white, murmuring songs of lament.

• The day is a National holiday
Undivided Pakistan

• People pay tribute to the martyrs, on this day, who establish Bangla as a
state language in undivided Pakistan in 1952.
• The seed of the language movement was sown on 21 March 1948

Amar Ekushey Book Fair
Amar Ekushey Book Fair

The 21st February popularly known as The Ekushe boi mela is the national book fair of 
Bangladesh. It is arranged each year by Bangla Academy and takes place for the whole month
of February in Dhaka. This event is dedicated to the martyrs who died on 21 February 1952 in a
demonstration calling for the establishment of Bengali as one of the state languages of former 
East Pakistan.

Why Ekushey Book Fair is Important?


Ekushey Book Fair is Important because this fair is devoted to the martyrs of 21st February of
1952 who has sacrificed their life for mother language. Now this book fair is not merely book
fair it also reflects the history and culture of Bangladesh. Ekushey Book Fairs holds such
importance that it is regarded as the cultural reunion of Bangladesh.
The first organization book fair and name selection
Muktodhara Publishing house started a little sale in front of
Bangla Academy in the 21 February 1972,[1] the Shaheed Day,
later International Mother Language Day.

 Bangla Academy took over organization of the fair in 1978. In


1984 it was named Amar Ekushey Book Fair.[3] Notably, in
1990s, another national book fair called Dhaka International
Book Fair was initiated. This book fair is organized by
government in February every year.

 The fairs will remain open every day from 3pm to 8:30pm,
except for holidays. It will remain open on holidays from 11am
to 8pm and the fair will run from 8am to 9pm on the
International Mother Language Day – February 21.

 Twenty three pavilions are expected to be set up in
Suhrawardy Udyan
 
One of the main attractions of this year is the release of
Mohammad Zafar Iqbal's new books, “Tobou Tuntuni
Tobou Chotachcho”, brought out by Pearl Publications;
“Pratina” from Somoy Prakashon and “Cyclone”
released from Tantralipi Prokash.
This year in 2018, some 3,000 freshly published
books are expected to grace the stalls and pavilions of
the fair. A total of 455 publishers are expected to have
participated this year.

Movement martyrs with 32 books from his publication
house- Muktodhara Prokashoni, would have been
proud!
 At least 15 foreign poets from eight different
countries will be present at the conference
