EMERGENCY EVACUATION COMMON INJURIES • Sprain and Strain • Cuts and Abrasions • Back Injuries • Crushing of Limbs • Amputations • Spinal Injuries COMMON INJURIES – SPRAIN COMMON INJURIES – STRAIN COMMON INJURIES – CUTS COMMON INJURIES – BRUISE COMMON INJURIES – CRUSH WOUNDS COMMON INJURIES – AMPUTATION COMMON INJURIES – SPINAL INJURY Requirements – A Risk Assessment must be conducted for special manual lifts involving special / awkward material, abnormal conditions. – Tool Box Talk on proper lifting technique must be conducted and explained to workers who perform regular / repetitive manual handling. – Use mechanical aides such as trolleys, rollers and levers or team lifting as much as possible for every lift. Try to use mechanical aides as much as possible. – An employee must not be required to lift loads beyond his physical capacity without any assistance. Compact loads of up to 50 kg can be safely lifted provided safe lifting techniques are used. – Plan your lift. Check your grip, posture and secure a clear line of travel – BEFORE YOU START. Make sure you are capable to complete the lift from start to finish. – Know and apply the safe lifting techniques – Use hand gloves when handling objects with corners and rough surfaces. – Check your footing that it does not slip while you carry the load. – Avoid horseplay when a worker is lifting a load EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITY
• Comply with the orders and instructions
related to industrial security and safety precautions and use the appropriate protective devices and treat any such devices in his possession with due care. • No worker shall commit any act leading to non-compliance with such instructions, or to the misuse, damage or destruction of the equipment provided for protecting the health and safety of the workers. SAFE LIFTING TECHNIQUE
1. Position your feet shoulder width apart near the load.
2. Bend your knees and keep your back straight 3. Securely grip and hold the object close to your body 4. Lift with your legs. Let the leg muscles take the weight of the load – not your back. 5. Do not twist your ankles or bend your back while you are carrying the load. 6. Lay down the load by bending your knees – not bending your back.
