Educational Measurement and Evaluation
Educational  Measurement and , Evaluation as used in
education refers to the process of quantifying an
individual’s achievement, personality, and attitudes among
others by means of appropriate measuring instruments.
Educational Measurement The first step towards elevating
a field of study into a science is to take measurements of
the quantities and qualities of interest in the field.
What is classroom assessment?

Classroom assessment is both a teaching approach and a set of

techniques. The approach is that the more you know about
what and how students are learning, the better you can plan
learning activities to structure your teaching. The techniques
are mostly simple, non-graded, anonymous, in-class activities
that give both you and your students useful feedback on the
teaching-learning process.
Assessment is a method for analyzing and evaluating student
achievement or program success
Concept of Classroom Assesment
Classroom Assessment is a systematic approach to
formative evaluation, used by instructors to determine how
much and how well students are learning.
Classroom Assessment is an ongoing process through which
teachers and students interact to promote greater learning .The
assessment process emphasizes data collection of student
performance to diagnose learning problems, monitor progress,
and give feedback for improvement. Involves using multiple
methods in order to obtain student information through a
variety of assessment strategies
How is classroom assessment different?

Classroom assessment differs from tests and other forms of student

assessment in that it is aimed at course improvement, rather than at
assigning grades. The primary goal is to better understand your students'
learning and so to improve your teaching.
How do I use Classroom Assessment Techniques?
Decide what you want to learn from a classroom assessment. Choose a
Classroom Assessment Technique (CAT) that provides this feedback, is
consistent with your teaching style, and can be easily implemented in your
class. Explain the purpose of the activity to students, then conduct it. After
class, review the results and decide what changes, if any, to make. Let your
students know what you learned from the CAT and how you will use this
information.
Two major types of Assessment
Formative Assessment are used to monitor students progress
during instruction Purpose – to make judgments about
individual student achievement and assign grades Example :
quizzes, tests, exams, term papers, lab reports, homework
Summative Assessment Comprehensive, typically given at
the end of a program and provide for accountability (burns)
Purpose – to inform teaching and improve learning used as
“feedback devices” Examples – pose questions, listen to
students questions and comments, monitor body language and
facial expressions, Classroom Assessment Techniques
Distinction between Assessment , Evaluation
,Measurement And Test
 Assessment refers to the full range of information gathered and synthesized
by teachers about their students and their classrooms .

 Evaluation is the process of systematic collection and analysis of both

qualitative and quantitative data for the purpose of making some decision
and judgments.

 Measurement is the process of obtaining a numerical description of the

degree to which an individual possesses a particular characteristic.
Measurement answers the question “How much?”

 Test An instrument or systematic procedure for measuring a sample of

behavior by posing a set of questions in a uniform manner.
