PE Also known as ‘restoring energy’ as it tends to
force an object to return to its original state of rest.

Potential Energy
Potential energy is the stored energy an object
has because of its position or state
•All energy starts out as potential energy
•Exists due to an object’s condition or position.
Formula:

 Where m = mass of the body,

 h is the height attained due to the body's

displacement and g is the acceleration due to
gravity which is constant on earth.
 Potential energy formula helps to calculate the
mass, height or potential energy if any of the two
quantities are given. It is expressed in Joules.
Solve the following problem:
 Question 1: A ball of mass 2 Kg is kept on the
hill of height 3Km. Calculate the potential energy
possessed by it?
Solution:

Mass of the body (m) = 2kg,
ACTIVITY
Height (h) = 3 Km,
Potential Energy possessed by the body = m  × g × h
Where g = 9.8 m/s22
∴ Potential Energy = 2 kg × 9.8 m/s  × 3 × 10  m  22 33

                                           = 6000 Kgm × 9.8 m/s

                                           = 58800 Nm
                                           = 58800 J.
Solve the following problem:
 Question 2: A cart is loaded with a brick and pulled at
constant speed along an inclined plane to the height of a seat-
top. If the mass of the loaded cart is 3.0 kg and the height of
the seat top is 0.45 meters, then what is the potential energy
of the loaded cart at the height of the seat-top?

Solution:
Given mass= 3.0 kg
gravity= 9.8m/s2
height = 0.45 m
PE = m*g*h
PE = (3 kg ) * (9.8 m/s2) * (0.45 m)
PE = 13.2 J
Types of Potential Energy
 Elastic potential energy is stored when materials
stretch or compress. Examples of elastic potential energy
include springs, rubber bands, and slingshots

Notice the ball compressing

and expanding
Types of Potential Energy

 Electric potential energy is the capacity for

doing work based on the object's electric charge.
Types of Potential Energy

 Nuclear potential energy of the particles

inside an atom.
Types of Potential Energy
 Chemical potential energy
is the energy stored up in substances due to
their chemical bonds. One example of this
is the energy stored in gasoline for a car.
1. Which of the following is the potential energy that is
stored in the nucleus of the atom? __________
2. Static shock, batteries and power lines all are good
examples of what kind of energy?______________
Activity
3. The food you eat and fossils fuels are both examples of
this form of energy chemical. ____________
4. A type of potential energy that is associated with objects
that can be stretched or compressed is called________
potential energy

Kinetic Energy
 Determined by the mass Energy an object has due to its
of the object and the motion
velocity at which the
object is moving.
Formula:

Where m = mass of the body,

v is the velocity with which body is moving.

The Kinetic energy is expressed in Kgm2/s2.

Kinetic energy formula is used to calculate the
mass, velocity or Kinetic energy of the body if
any of the two quantities are given.
Solve the following Problem:
 Question : A car is moving with the velocity of
10 m/s and is having mass of 250 Kg. Calculate
its Kinetic energy?
ACTIVITY
Solution:

Given: Mass of the body m = 250 Kg,
          Velocity v = 10 m/s,
Kinetic energy is given by K.E = 1/2 mv2
                                            = 1/2 × 250 Kg (10 m/s)2
                                            = 12500 Kgm2/s2.
Solve the following Problem:
 Question 2: What is the kinetic energy of a 45 kg
object moving at 13 m/sec?

Solution:

Given mass = 45 kg
velocity = 13 m/sec
KE = 1/2 mv2
= 1/2 (45 kg)(13 m/sec)2
= 3802.5 J.
Solve the following Problem:
 Question 3: Determine the kinetic energy of a
625-kg roller coaster car that is moving with a
speed of 18.3 m/s.
Solution:

Given mass = 625 kg

velocity = 18.3 m/sec
KE = 0.5(mv )2 or
K.E
= (0.5)(625 = 0.5(mv
kg)(18.3 m/s)2 2
)
= 1.05 x105 Joules
History
Potential energy can be defined as the energy
of a body due to its position; in case of a
system, it is the energy due to the arrangement
of the particles within the system. Joule,
represented as “J” is the unit used to measure
potential energy as is the case with all types of
work and energy. For the first time, the term
potential energy was coined by William
Rankine, a 19th century Scottish engineer.
Potential energy can be understood as the
energy contained in the body which is not used
so far, but is readily available for use.

William Rankine coined the term “potential

energy”.
History
Kinetic energy is the energy that an object in
motion has. While kinetic energy is a principle
part of the mechanics of the universe, scientists
have studied and identified the properties of
kinetic energy for centuries. Scientists such as
Galileo and Newton wrote documents
describing the motion of objects, both
on Earth and in the sky. But, the term “kinetic
energy” was first used by a scientist
named William Thomson in the late 1800s.

William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, was born

on June 26th, 1824 and died on December 17th,
1907. He was a great scientist and engineer but
did made some mistakes.
