1 We can see the direction of the wind blowing by looking at a
weather vane.

2 A weather vane can be seen on a tall building or a flag pole.

3 Name of a wind is given based on the compass direction which it

blows.

1 There are certain winds that almost blow in the same direction.

2 Winds that blow in the same direction is called prevailing winds.

3 At certain places on the Earth, there are high air pressure and low air
pressure.

4 The air pressure is low at the Equator because the Earth’s surface is very
hot there and the hear makes the air expand and rise, so lowering its

 4 Three main belts of the prevailing winds on each side of the
Equator:
a. Trade winds
b. Westerlies
c. Polar Easterlies

5 The do not blow directly north-south between the belts.

6 Because the spin of the Earth causes the prevailing winds to

spin to the side.

 THE BEAUFORT SCALE
1 Wind speed = measure of the strength of the wind.

2 It shows how far the air is moving.

3 We can estimate the speed of the wind by the effect of smoke,

flags or tree branches.

4 Weather forecasters often use a scale worked out by Admiral Sir

Francis Beaufort in 1805.

 5 His scale was used to measure wind speed at
sea.

6 The his scale has been modified for use on land.

7 The Beaufort scale goes from 0 which is dead

calm with no wind at all.

 HOW CAN WE MEASURE WIND
SPEED?
1 It is important o measure wind speed accurately.

2 This is especially for the safety of boats, ships, aircrafts and oil
rigs.

3 Anemometer = instrument for measuring wind speed.

4 Has four little cups that turn in the winds.

 5 Cups attached to a shaft to a meter or scale.

6 The harder the wind blows, the faster the cups of the
anemometer turn and the reading goes higher on the
meter.
