“To be in the
world”
-Martin Heidegger-
ACTIVITY
Martin Heidegger’s
Being-in-the-World
Martin Heidegger
- German Philosopher
call human beings
DASEIN, a German word
which literally means
BEING THERE.
Our very being is to
be there, to be in
the world—being-in-
the-world.
“To be in the World”
means that our
experiences are
always situated in
our world.
We can’t
detach
ourselves from
our situation
WHO I AM
THINGS AND PEOPLE
AROUND ME, MY CULTURE,
LANGUAGE, AND
EVERTHING THAT IS
PRESENT IN MY SITUATION.
Being in the world
therefore means
that we live
everything that is
present in my
situation
Being in the
world means
to be with
things.
Things as soon as
we are born: the
materials and
structure used
during our delivery
It is impossible
for someone to
live without any
relation to thing.
The things around
us affects the
definition of who
we are
As embodied
subjects, our
bodies have a
direct and concrete
relation to the
things around us
Example:

Water
(Farmer, Chemist,
Fireman, Swimmer)
Being in the
world also
means to be
with other
people.
Our being situated
in the world
inevitably links us
to people.
These links are not
simple to define
relationship but are
real and
transformative.
Encounter with this
as practical,
encounter with
people as familiar.
People
around us
defines who
we are
Being in the world
means that we are
situated in time and
place.
We are immersed in
a particular culture,
language and social
structures.
Temporal distance
makes it difficult
for us to
understand the
perspective of the
distant party
“Noong
panahon…”
The things that make
you happy when you
were in your
preschool years no
longer give you the
same satisfaction
Our place where
we are situated
plays a big role in
shaping who we
are.
Heidegger’s concept of
being-in-the-world
informs us of the very
nature of who we are,
that is we are shaped
by everything around us
