CONTROL SYSTEM DESIGN EXAMPLE

5
CONTROL GOAL

• The goal of this control design is to

automatically adjust a car´s speed to keep a
safe distance.

• It also could control the steering as well as

the speed allowing drivers to lock on to the
car ahead and get a “computer tow”.
VARIABLES TO BE CONTROLED

• Position of the lead.

• Relative position.

• Position of the follower.

DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

• A comparison between the position of lead

and position of the follower.

• A video camera and processing algorithms.

• A comparison between the relative position

and the desired one.
Preliminary system configuration

Control Systems - Spring 2013 9

Description of Preliminary system
configuration
• This control system is a closed-loop system. The picture represents
a preliminary system configuration. The set point is the safe
distance.

• The sensor is a camera that detected the image of the car in front and
with the he processor compare it with a stream of incoming live
images obtaining the distance between cars. Subtracting the
measured distance to the set point the system generates an error.

• The controller uses the error to generate the input for the actuator
that modify the car’s speed.
Conclusions

• We need control theory fundamentals to make all of this

automatically and to make our world easier.

• With this design of the circuit we can calculate the velocity and the
distance between two car doing the drive experienc so easy for all of
us.
