IDENTITY AND

COLOUR – GOLDIE BY
EMILY BRUNDIGE
CONNOR KOPP, ELA 30-1
WHAT IS THE TEXT SAYING ABOUT IDENTITY?

• Goldie by Emily Brundige tells the story of a giant girl who struggles to find her place in
life given her enormous size.
• One of the key messages from Goldie is that the way others see us has an impact on how
we see ourselves.
• In the short film, Goldie is seen as a nuisance by some, and a joy to others. Both of these
interpretations alter how Goldie fells about herself.
COLOUR CHOICE AND SYMBOLISM

• In the background of the film, we often see a soft,

pastel pink colour. Pastel colours are often
associated with innocence.
• Pink specifically symbolizes youth, sweetness,
romance, and delicateness.
• Pink is a warm colour, but the desaturated pink
used in Goldie suggests a soft warmth – a warmth (Brundige, 2019)
that you would feel from the love of family or
acceptance from friends.
WHAT FUNCTION IS THAT COLOUR PROVIDING
IN THE TEXT?
• This colour exists in the background, therefore helping to craft the overall tone of the
film.
• It gives Goldie’s neighbourhood a warm, soft feeling – almost dreamlike and idyllic. The
innocence and sweetness of the pink makes me feel that there could never be a bad day in
this world.
HOW DOES THIS FUNCTION SERVE WHAT THE
TEXT IS SAYING ABOUT IDENTITY?
• As previously mentioned, one of Goldie’s messages is that the
way others see us has an impact on how we see ourselves.
• By the end of the film, all of the characters have come to accept
Goldie for who she is. Because she has been accepted by others,
Goldie learns how to accept herself.
• The narrative tone of acceptance and love is enhanced with the
help the colour pink in the background, establishing an
(Brundige, 2019)
atmospheric tone of sweetness and love. In the end, Miss
Petunia accepts Goldie for who she is.
