What is an Article
Critique?
Ranges 250 to 750 It is a critical
words, but is not a assessment, analysis,
simple summary
or evaluation of a
work.
As an advance form of writing, critique, involves your 2
skills in critical thinking and recognizing arguments.
• Movie Review- they are written for a
general audience and primarily aim to
offer a persuasive opinion.
• Article Critique- addresses a more
specific audience and usually offers a
critical response to a published
scholarly work.
• Book Reports- focus on describing the
plot, characters, or ideas of a certain 3

work.

Important Guidelines in
Writing an Article
Critique
• Read the article to be reviewed
carefully to get its main concept.
• Reread it to get the arguments being
presented.
• Focus on discussing how the book
treats the topic and not the topic itself.
Start your sentences with phrases
such as “This book presents…” and
“This author argues…” 15
• Situate you review. Your analysis
should be anchored on the theories
presented by the book or article writer.
• Compare the writer’s explanation of
the topic to another expert from the
same field of study.
• Point out other conclusions or
interpretations that the writer missed
out. Present other ideas that need to be 16

examined.
• Show your reaction to the
writer’s ideas and present an
explanation. You can either
agree or disagree with the
ideas, as long as you can
sufficiently support your stand.
