Trilaminar embryonal disc
Exterior of the heart – cardiac
looping
 As the heart tube begins to
lengthen,it bulges and bends to
the right within the pericardial
cavity
 The bulbis cordis and ventricle
grow faster than other regions,
initiating folding of the tubular
heart
 Bulbis cordis – inferiorly,
ventrally and to the right
 Primitive ventricle- left
 Primitive atrium- posteriorly and
superiorly
Sinus venosus

 Originally a symmetrical
structure

Venous return more to the
right

Left horn becomes small
 Opening shifts to the right

Later – part of the right
atrium
Formation of atria
 Left atrium

left half of primitive atrial chamber
 Absorbed proximal parts of the
pulmonary viens
 Left half of AV canal

 Right atrium
 Right half of primitive atrium

Sinus venosus
 Right half of AV canal
Formation of ventricles

 Left ventricle- the primitive ventricular chamber

 Right ventricle-The proximal part of bulbus cordis
 Conus gives rise to infundibulum of the right ventricle and
aortic vestibule of left ventricle
Left-Right partition
 Interatrial septum
 Interventricular septum

Spiral (aortico-pulmonary) septum
 Endocardial cushions (AV cushions)
Endocardial cushions (AV
cushions)

 Two thickenings on the dorsal and ventral walls

of the AV canal
 Grow towards each other and fuse
 Divided into right and left halves
Interatrial septum
Interventricular septum
 Muscular IV septum-
septum inferius
 Membranous IV
septum-
fusion of conotruncal
ridges and endocardial
cushions (septum
intermedium)
Spiral (aortico-pulmonary)
septum
 A spiral septum within the truncus arteriosus
which subdivides it into the ascending aorta,
and the pulmonary trunk.
Derivatives of embryonic structures

Primitive atria- auricles of right and left atria

Rt. horn of sinus venosus- smooth part of right atrium

Left horn of sinus venosus-coronary sinus
 Primitive pulmonary veins- smooth part of left atrium

Conus cordis- outflow tract for both ventricles-infundibulum
and aortic vestibule

Bulbus cordis- trabeculated right ventricle
 Primitive ventricle- trabeculated left ventricle

Truncus arteriosus- ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk
