Objectives in designing jigs and fixtures for
welding
• • The primary function of a jig or fixture is to establish
• and hold the proper position of the parts throughout
• the welding cycle.
• • A jig or fixture must repeatedly produce parts within
• the specified tolerances with little or no distortion.
• • Proper heat control in the weld area must be
• maintained.
• • Whenever possible, all welding should be done
• in a flat, horizontal plane.
Objectives in designing jigs and fixtures for
welding
• Jigs and fixtures must be foolproof and easy to
• operate.
• • Only essential dimensions should be located and
• clamped rigidly.
• • All welded areas must be easily accessible.
• • Any heavy tools must be supported by mechanical
• devices. The operator should not have to do
• heavy lifting.
• • As many operations as possible should be performed
• before moving the part in the tool.
Inspection fixtures
• Every part made must meet a standard for size and
• shape if it is to perform its design function. While it is
• quite possible to measure each dimension separately,
• this is not the most cost-effective means to ensure
• part quality and conformity to dimension. To satisfy
• the requirements of speed and accuracy, gauging or
• inspection fixtures are used
