• Speed of the impulse along the axon is faster in myelinated neurone.
• Myelination is the formation of a myelin sheath.
• Myelin sheath produced by Schwann cells for peripheral axons.
• Myelin sheath produced by oligodendrocytes for central axons.
• This causes saltatory conduction.
• Saltatory conduction is the propagation of action potentials along
myelinated axons from one node of Ranvier to the next node.
• This increasing the conduction velocity of action potentials/ nerve impulse.

PAGE 14
• As depolarisation cannot occur at the cells making up the myelin sheath
• The wave of depolarisation can only occur at the nodes of ranvier
• Thus, action potentials appear to jump from node to node when travelling down an axon.
• This phenomenon is known as saltatory conduction
• Serves as a means of increasing the rate of propagation of an action potential
• Also conserves energy for the axon as depolarization only occurs at the nodes and not along the whole length
of the nerve fibre, as in unmyelinated fibres.

• Impulses cannot be transmitted
• So action potentials not possible
• Sodium diffuse into the axon of the neurone
• As poison caused the sodium channels to open
• Sodium diffuses – so it moves into axon down the concentration gradient
• Thus neurone is depolarized
• Poison permanently causes the sodium channels to open
• So depolarisation is permanent
• Resting potential cannot be re-established
